La storia parla della giovane Jun Fudo, modella in quel di Tokyo, che sovente sente dentro di se una sorta di strana inquietudine, una paura inspiegabile di se stessa che la porta a vivere in una sorta di isolamento interrotto solo dall’amicizia della piccola Kazumi, nessun amico e / o fidanzato…..
Questa sua paura interiore verrà presto chiarita dalla misteriosa Asuka Ran, agente della Human Alliance, una sorta di organizzazione volta ad eliminare e nascondere all’opinione pubblica il pericolo dei Devil Beast Progress (DPB), persone cioè il cui codice genetico si è inspiegabilmente modificato e li porta, in particolari condizioni e stati d’animo, a trasformarsi in esseri “pericolosi” sia dalle sembianze riconducibili ad animali e/o insetti (carino il lupo del primo episodio) che di vegetali (una strana pianta nel quarto episodio).
Jun sembra mostrare nei confronti della fredda Asuka un certo timore reverenziale che presto si trasforma in una cieca sudditanza psicologica. Infatti Asuka mette Jun di fronte ad un DPB e a sua volta Jun, sentitasi minacciata, si trasforma in un Devil Hunter, vale a dire un DPB che però anche se trasformato mantiene una sua coscienza umana.
I conti sono presto fatti Jun rappresenta l’esemplare femmina di Akira Fudo, Asuka è invece Ryo, il plot nagaiano viene quindi riproposto. Quello che però rende particolare questa serie è che la violenza non è solo fisica (pochi squartamenti rispetto a Devilman) ma psicologica, ed è una violenza che traspare soprattutto nella sempre maggiore considerazione che Jun comincia ad avere di se stessa. Asuka tende a trattare Jun come un cane da caccia, come la propria arma personale, una sottomessa subordinata che prova piacere nell’uccidere……..E’ questo l’elemento più “forte”, Jun si rende conto che prova enorme piacere nell’uccidere i DPB, sembra che la trasformazione sia in realtà una “scusa” volta a giustificare la sua violenza e la sua ferocia; non a caso ogni DBP che Jun uccide prima di morire gli chiede perché lei si ostini a uccidere “i suoi fratelli che si sono evoluti”!

Avrete a questo punto già capito che Devil Lady affronta tematiche care a Go Nagai ma ne indirizza lo sviluppo su una trama che predilige quasi evidenziare gli stati d’animo anziché l’azione, cosa che peraltro riesce all’attenta regia di Toshiki Hirano.
