Well here was one of the bigger surprises for the onslaught of Spring 2008 releases. If you saw Brown Jenkins coming then congratulations because no one, at least that I am presently acquainted with, had a clue about this guy. Brown Jenkins is on man that goes merely by the initials UA. The project got its start in 2006 alongside his other efforts in Starshine, a project shared with another man named Oscar. The album seems to focus on subjects that would more loosely be associated with the likes of Deathspell Omega and perhaps even fellow statesmen Absu than your typical run-of-the-mill misanthropic metallers. Darkness, otherworldly and at times even cosmic, Brown Jenkins' Angel Eyes is a picture that stretches light years out of reality and into more pure terrain.

The sound of Brown Jenkins is raw and sludgey, focusing on old school disharmonic sounds like that of Burzum, but also manages to pull out the drone doom hand and play it in a way that pushes Angel Eyes into an entirely new territory of “Raw” metal. Where most raw black metal resorts to shit production and untalented, unpassionate music to push their envelope, Brown Jenkins is more satisfied with taken the most raw elements of not only the music in black metal and doom metal, but also the ideologies involved, and crudely duct taping them together to create his own world of madness and darkness where he is king.

There is some black metal out there that is so easy to get lost in that it temporarily can change who you are for a short time after listening. This man seems to have more in common with psychotics like Charles Manson than his other less-than-worthy USBM counterparts. Its strange that even though black metal continues to stagnate to the point of self-destruction, still artists manage to pop up here and there, brand new, who really give the followers of the genre something to be excited about.
