The Bloodline was founded in 1998 by producer Roman Schoensee. He is known from Pyogenesis. Well, that is a band I was really fond of in the mid nineties. A quick research in my collection learns me that he was the bass player on my favourite Pyogenesis album 'Twinaleblood'. Earlier, The Bloodline released a debut album 'Opium Hearts', but for this 'Where Lost Souls Dwell' Roman asked the assistance of Kemi Vita, main force and female vocalist of the Dutch gothic band The Dreamside. This resulted in a very fertile cooperation and I am so glad to notice that Roman did not loose his touch with the most expressive period of darkened gothic metal.

'Where Lost Souls Dwell' is an intense, dark album that send shivers down your spine. The nineties gothic was more doomy instead of fairylike. This is passion and not just entertainment! Fans of that lost atmosphere who have stopped looking for something special in the mass of bands with a nice-looking female singer, would do well in making an exception for The Bloodline. The dark passages with spoken lyrics, arcane keyboards, once growling, once whispering male vocals inn the atmosphere of Tiamat at the time of their 'Wild Honey' album.

Something we can find in the spatial, melancholic larger-than-life guitar soloing too. The songs flow into each other almost imperceptible and also the lyrics use sentences repeatedly. Female vocals add a zest to the gloomy atmosphere, it is not just a woman singing the lead parts. Moreover it is Roman in the front with his raucous voice. Everything is based on the theme of a gruesome, atrocious mood. Two narrators are hired to colour the spoken excerpts in an optimal way.

Fans of early Tiamat will surely love this, but as I ticked off earlier, there is a proper doom sound in it too. This is manifested mostly in the magnificent 'Abandon All Hope' where solemn spoken lyrics and piano pass into My Dying Bride doom riffs. A song with an apocalyptical beauty and even a few black metal screaming vocals. An industrial sound-scape opens 'I Think We Simply Fall' but in the latter part of the album the band reminds me a bit of Draconian too, partly because of Kemi's female vocals and the general doom penchant. What makes this album so thrilling is a deep dark atmosphere that never weakens. Just listen to the desperate and full of desire sung 'Remember', again a shivery highlight. It seems as if you see scary painted creatures lighting up black candles. This is an album where inspiration has led to high levelled expression. It has an authentic atmosphere, averse to any trend.
