[color=blue]Celeberrima per la sua straordinaria duttilità vocale - era capace di elettrizzanti acuti quanto di suadenti tonalità basse - le sue improvvisazioni e i suoi virtuosismi nello "scat" (stile canoro che consiste nell'usare la voce come uno strumento, cantando sillabe accostate casualmente), Ella Fitzgerald è stata assieme a Billie Holiday e Sarah Vaughan una delle più grandi cantanti di jazz di sempre, distinguendosi soprattutto nel genere dello "swing", in cui eccelleva per una voce sfavillante con cui riusciva, con la stessa intensità, a far commuovere e a far divertire.
Ella Jane Fitzgerald nasce a Newport News, in Virginia, il 25 aprile 1917. Trascorre la sua infanzia in un orfanotrofio di New York, e appena diciassettenne fa il suo debutto come cantante sul palcoscenico dell' "Harlem Apollo Theatre", durante la serata dedicata agli artisti dilettanti.
La giovane si presenta come ballerina, ma una crisi di nervi le impedisce qualunque movimento: una volta fuori dalle quinte è il panico. Su incitamento del presentatore la giovane Ella decide di non lasciare il pubblico a bocca asciutta, e così comincia a cantare.
Nonostante l'insicurezza vince il primo premio.
Quella sera stessa viene notata dal noto batterista Chick Webb, che la vuole come cantante della sua band. Dal 1934 al 1939 Ella Fitzgerald canterà con la "Chick Webb Band", della cui direzione prenderà le redini dal 1939, anno della morte di Webb, fino al 1942.
Verso la metà degli anni '40, Ella Fitzgerald si esibisce in Europa e in Asia portando il suo jazz nelle sale da concerto classiche. Ormai è una diva: le sue ineguagliabili doti canore la portano ad affrontare diversi generi, come lo swing, il dixieland e il blues, oltre al caro vecchio jazz. Dal 1946 Ella farà parte anche del "Jazz at the Philharmonic".
Negli anni '50 canta, tra gli altri, con Duke Ellington alla "Carnegie Hall" di New York, e con il trio di Oscar Peterson.
Tra le sue ultime apparizioni in pubblico va ricordato il concerto al "Kool Jazz Festival" tenuto nel 1985 sempre alla "Carnegie Hall". Rimane indimenticabile la sua interpretazione nell'opera "Porgy and Bess" di George Gershwin, al fianco di Louis Armstrong, della cui colonna sonora amava intonare con struggente sensibilità in quasi tutti i suoi concerti la celeberrima "Summertime".
Nonostante negli ultimi anni la grande cantante subisca una grave forma di diabete, continuerà ad esibirsi in pubblico con grande forza d'animo fino al 1992.
Ella Fitzgerald si è spenta il 15 giugno 1996 a Beverly Hills, in California, all'età di settantotto anni.
