Torrent description

Kenny G - Classics in the Key of G
Audio CD (June 29, 1999)
Original Release Date: June 29, 1999
Label: Arista
Bitrate: 128 kbps

Offering a tribute to composers of previous generations, soprano saxophonist Kenny G uses his 11th career release to present his interpretations of various standards and assorted chestnuts from the past century. G\'s approach is as smooth and gentle as ever, and anyone in the market for mild-mannered, relaxing jazz should be satisfied with this package. Highlights include a slowly evolving version of George Gershwin\'s \"Summertime,\" with George Benson on guitar, and a largely respectful rendering of Monk\'s \"\'Round Midnight.\" Subdued orchestral backing is used throughout the recording, and two vocal selections are included: a \"duet\" with the Louis Armstrong vocal track from \"What a Wonderful World,\" and the subdued samba of \"The Girl from Ipanema,\" which features singer Bebel Gilberto, daughter of the song\'s original vocalists. That selection is reprised instrumentally on an uncredited, nonindexed 11th track that is heard about 20 seconds after the conclusion of Harold Arlen\'s \"Over the Rainbow.\" Languid listening from start to finish. ~ Terry Wood

This is a wonderfull CD, it transport me to wonderfull places and times. I think that the whole seleccion was perfect not only because of the interpretation, as well because of the songs perfect choice. ~ Enrique Altamirano

If you like Kenny G, you will love this album. \"Summertime\" is, by itself, worth the price of the album. This sensuous, soulful rendition is awesome. Buy it already. ~ S. Porter

With the likes of George Benson, David Foster, and Bebel Gilberto, in accompaniment, and with the digital overlaying of Louis Armstrong; make no mistake, this album while featuring Kenny G, is about the music. Unlike so much of today’s categorical “contemporary jazz” or “smooth jazz” this is about songs anyone over 40 can relate to. These are the songs that stir memories and make you sing along when you’re driving the car. I was never a Kenny G fan, but I that’s been changed by this album. His cover of “Desafinado” doesn’t yield to the classic great performances of Stan Getz one iota, while the “Girl from Ipanema” with Bebel Gilberto has an irreverent edge to his tenor tone that is atypical of Kenny G, and contrasts against the near-velvet voice of Ms. Gilberto. For a man who has changed the contemporary instrumental world with the soprano saxophone, I personally like his tenor sound better, and it’s a big beautiful tone not heard that much in today’s music. The “Wonderful World” cut with Louis Armstrong has been both praised and maligned by the jazz world, and for those who would take umbrage… shame on you. Louis Armstrong’s original was and is still wonderful, musically I think this one’s nicely done and entertaining… just like Louis would have liked it… pure entertainment. Wonderfully done. This one’s for the listeners, whether they play themselves or not. All the stars. ~ John (Manteca, CA)
