Body & Soul {Pilz 1993}

"John Birks Gillespie was born in South Carolina, 1917. He studied the trumpet as a boy, and gained early employment with Cab Calloway. He had a irrepressible sense of humor which erupted in frequent bursts of clowning around and horseplay. Cab, was not amused and fired him. As it turned out bandleader Teddy Hill was looking for someone to replace trumpeter Roy Eldridge. Gillespie idolized Eldridge and could play his parts perfectly. Hill hired him, and when Gillespie started goofing around on-stage, he noted the audience reaction. Instead of firing him he dubbed him "Dizzy" and allowed the crowd-pleasing young trumpet player to do his thing! In the 1950's Dizzy kept experimenting and growing with his pioneering blend of be-bop and big band charts and his use of Latin rhythms.

Dizzy remained an innovator, a contemmporary on-the-stage player until his death in 1992. Unlike many of his contemporaries he never coasted, and he continued to record and play, always experimenting with new forms, and a special concentration on Latin-jazz fusion. This album presents a transcription of a live concert in the 1950's with unknown sidemen. While there is some inherent noise from damage to the transcription discs, we felt this music shows Gillespie's be-bop achievement in rare form. This is prime Diz!"
