Join Me in celebrating the man's life with this discography project. please go to the bottom and see if you've got any of the missing albums and contact me if you do, so that i can include them in future packs! Let's get all of the man's work out in the open!

This has been by far one of the most exciting and enjoyable (and tiring) music packs I've ever put together for torrent seeding partly because there are just so many albums out there spanning the man's nearly 40 year career. There are no compilations in this pack, well, let me rephrase that "...only relevant compilation cds have been added to the pack" but still, there are only like 10 to 15 of them, and I've included them only because they include previously unreleased tracks. I spent sometime trying to decide whether to release some of his post-death album compilations, but I thought it unnecesary as those can already be easily found all over the net. So, we are talking 10 - 15 relevant compilations, and the rest are full-blown classic releases. While this is by no means a discography, I believe it will have more Chet stacked in it than you (or I, for that matter) have ever seen...yet(!) because it's taken almost 3 years and lots of bandwidth, begging and sexual favors (and dead hard drives) to get me all these, as I've insisted on the highest quality mp3 files out there. Unfortunately, some (very few) of these are in wma, ogg and 128kbps, and one or two are even lowwer in quality :( ....and while I am not happy about this, I do know that it is better to have a super rare file in low-quality, than to have never have had the beauty of the good music grace one's ears. Also, while it's been important to me that I get all the files out there that are chet-related, I wanted the torrent to stay below 20gigss, so I removed all the files I had in LOSSLESS format and converted them to APX or roughly 320vbr...mainly because I want as many people as possible to pick up these files, and I know a 47.0Gig (The original Size Of the Pack with LOSSLESS and LOSSY content) chet baker torrent would scare too many folks off. So, Ultimately, I Hope someone out there will enjoy all the effort I put into this pack, but most of all, the music. If you really like the music, go see a show, buy a cd a month, make a mixtape for your girl-friend or that weird guy that lives down the street. Whatever! Spread the magic of your musical discoveries with someone else. Today, tomorrow and the day after(!)....For the Love Of the music!

All the files here range from standard to blazing high quality mp3 files. As Always, all the 320vbr albums were converted via dbPowerAMP from LOSSLESS sources using the Alt Preset Extreme Setting. The sources of the albums include bittorrent, emule+, soulseek, DC++ (and my personal collection) and have all been checked and double-checked for consistency (i.e. they are all whole albums as opposed to the kazaa gathering method), and none seem to be lossy to lossy transcodes. All Folders have been labelled with as much info as possible, and the screenshot shows them off, so you know exactly what you're downloading when you decide to. Lastly, each pack (4 more to go) will be roughly about the same size as this one, and I've set them to 4 gigs to allow for easy burn to 1 DVD or 6 CDS. Props for this idea should go to staremi of the demonoid boards

Jazzman Baker sang and played trumpet like a dream and lived a nightmare, thanks to a heroin habit that wreaked havoc on his soul and on the lives of those around him. Gavin's in-depth bio is definitive, tracing Baker's career and his art in detail. Yet the volume feels like it belongs on the shelf next to such harrowing addiction tomes as William Burroughs' Junky and Art Pepper's Straight Life. Popular cool-toned trumpeter and a fragile singer whose charisma made up for his limited voice, with his good looks Chet Baker probably could have been a movie star. Instead he became a drug addict in the mid-'50s and had an extremely erratic lifestyle with horrific episodes alternating with some wonderful musical moments.

Chet Baker certainly started out on top. After getting out of the Army, he gigged with Charlie Parker on the West Coast in 1952 and then joined the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, a pianoless unit that soon became among the most popular in jazz. After Mulligan was jailed for his own drug problems, Baker (who had helped make "My Funny Valentine" into a hit) formed a quartet with pianist Russ Freeman. He began to win polls on both trumpet and vocals, toured Europe in 1955 and seemed on his way to a lucrative career. But by 1960 Baker was in an Italian jail and, although he made a few worthy recordings in the '60s, by the end of the decade his teeth had been knocked out after a botched drug deal and he was out of music.

Against all odds Chet Baker made a gradual comeback in the 1970s. Although Baker recorded far too much during his final 15 years, his nomadic lifestyle (never kicking drugs and essentially wandering all over Europe) was unstable and his occasional vocals (always an acquired taste) were generally poor, his trumpet playing actually improved as the decade progressed. In fact despite everything, Chet Baker was still in his musical prime when he fell out of a second story window (pushed or slipped?) to his death in 1988. Just six years after Columbia Records introduced the 33 1/3 LP (in 1948), the label unveiled another successful innovation: a trumpet-and-strings album by Chet Baker. Baker proved especially appropriate for this setup due to the lyrical, singing quality of his playing. Chet Baker With Strings features various arrangers including Johnny Mandel, Marty Paich, Shorty Rogers, and Jack Montrose. Included is Cole Porter's "I Love You" arranged by Mandel.

Liner Note Author: Michael Cuscuna. Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California (12/1953). Arranger: Jack Montrose. Before recording CHET BAKER SINGS (the album for which he is best known), Baker cut some excellent sides that showcased his fine trumpet playing sans vocals. CHET BAKER ENSEMBLE, collected from tracks cut in a 1953 session, has Baker working firmly in a bop context, with emphasis on his clean, West Coast style. Working with a septet that includes baritone, tenor, and alto saxophones, Baker takes his cue from Miles Davis's '49/'50 recordings, blending elements of bop and big-band swing, along with a breezy, restrained approach the trumpeter would soon come to epitomize. Tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose, who penned seven of the 13 tracks here, also wrote the arrangements, which allow for a sound that is rich but never cluttered, approximating a streamlined quartet, but with greater texture and variety. The musicianship is fine throughout, and Baker's playing gleams on bop workouts ("Little Old Lady") and tender ballads ("Moonlight Becomes You"). Though all of these cuts have appeared separately on various albums, this 2004 remaster brings together the '53 session results for the first time under one cover, making CHET BAKER ENSEMBLE an essential addition to Baker's discography.

If the cool jazz trend of the 1950s was intended to mean the opposite of what hot jazz stood for--sprightly syncopations at breakneck tempos--many of its supposed practitioners played at the wrong temperature. But trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker always epitomized the style--quiet, often somber, self-absorbed to the point of fragility. He was nevertheless a player who could summon great soul to his performance and who found a kindred spirit in Charlie Parker when the alto saxophonist made an ill-fated West coast trip. Grey December combines a session with Herb Geller on alto sax, Jack Montrose on tenor, and Bud Shank on flute with a 1955 session setting Baker's trumpet and vocals against moody string arrangements.

Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Russ Freeman (piano); Bob Whitlock, Carson Smith, Joe Mondragon (bass); Bobby White, Larry Bunker, Shelly Manne (drums). Producer: Richard Bock. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded in Los Angeles, California in July and October 1953. Includes liner notes by Doug Ramsey. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This is part of Pacific Jazz Records' West Coast Classics series. These early sides for the Pacific Jazz label feature a young Chet Baker just at the beginning of his musical prime. Baker is joined by many of his regular West Coast buddies, and on the whole, the sessions encapsulate the essence of the West Coast "cool" style that was coming into its own in the early '50s. Since this was still the age of the 10-inch disc, Baker and Freeman produce many fine, concise solo efforts, keeping the arrangements short but full of life. Baker plays trumpet throughout, but puts in a gorgeous vocal performance on his soon-to-be signature ballad "I Fall in Love Too Easily," greatly shortened here and taken at a slightly quicker pace than usual. Freeman proves to be Baker's ultimate musical compatriot, keeping pace with the young trumpeter every step of the way. Standout cuts include the dreamy "Isn't it Romantic," the wonderfully frantic swinger "Bea's Flat," and two cuts of the delightfully arranged "Winter Wonderland.

The Original Gerry Mulligan Tentet & Quartet is a reissue on Gene Norman's GNP/Crescendo label. Norman originally produced the sessions in 1953, but the music contained on this CD sounds timeless. A natural extension of Tadd Dameron's bop arranging for big band/big band arranging for small group concept, this album features one of Dameron's compositions ("Lady Bird"), along with a handful of standards: a Miles Davis original and eight Mulligan compositions that truly represent the West Coast style in both sound and spirit. A young but exciting Chet Baker is heard throughout on trumpet; other West Coast notables include Bud Shank, Pete Candoli, and Chico Hamilton, and the entire ensemble performs admirably. For those interested in the '50s West Coast scene, or new fans looking for quintessential Gerry Mulligan, look no further than Tentet & Quartet.

Arrangers: Jack Montrose; Johnny Mandel; Bill Holman; Bob Zieff. One of the best non-vocal Chet Baker albums, this outing features the artist in two sextet settings. The first (tracks 1-8) augments the piano/bass/drums backing group with valve trombone and baritone sax, while the second (tracks 9-12) adds French horn, bass clarinet, bassoon, and cello to Baker's trumpet, dispensing with piano and drums. The first set moves along smoothly in a manner of the West Coast "cool" jazz of the time (which brought a detached, restrained air to the intensity of traditional bop). Fine arranging from Jack Montrose, Johnny Mandel, and Bill Holman keeps the ensemble parts clean and well balanced, and each player solos with poise and technical prowess. Baker's classic style is in ample evidence throughout--note the definitive rendition of "Stella by Starlight" here. However, the second sextet's tracks--culled from a session once believed lost--really surprise. Featuring tunes written and arranged by Bob Zieff, the swinging--but somehow stately--songs here are unique. The lack of drums gives the music a very distinctive chamber-music aspect that was quite unusual for the time in a jazz context. The results are intimate, atmospheric, startling, and quite beautiful; these tunes alone make the set worthy of attention.

Chet Baker's reputation as a soft, lyrical trumpeter ignores the fact that he was by no means a lightweight performer in his prime. The title number here, a frighteningly uptempo treatment, shows just how strong his grip on time and technique really was. Baker was in his mid-20s, and the drugs that were to blight his life had not yet done any serious damage. These 13 pieces were recorded live at concerts in 1953 and 1954, with the excellent Russ Freeman on piano, Carson Smith on bass, and Larry Bunker and Bob Neel on drums. Gerry Mulligan once described Baker's playing as "just uncanny.... It's as simple as breathing with him." It is that simplicity and freshness which come over here, together with a gift for finding fascinating new twists to familiar phrases. He never quite lost it, but this was the best of him. Contains JAZZ AT ANN ARBOR (1954) as well as five previously unreleased tracks.

An essential CD for Chet Baker fans, this reissue includes some of the selections on the long-unavailable Mosaic Records collection The Complete Pacific Jazz Live Recordings of the Chet Baker Quartet with Russ Freeman. Baker's productive partnership with pianist Freeman only lasted from mid-1953 to 1955, yet it coincided with and helped spark the meteoric rise in the trumpeter's popularity after he split with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and went solo. The recording is aptly named, as Baker literally appeared out of nowhere to win the Down Beat Readers' Poll for trumpet in 1953 and again in 1954 after an acclaimed U.S. tour. Recorded at the Santa Cruz Civic Center in July 1954 and at the Tiffany Club in L.A. that August, the 10 tracks showcase the controlled passion that typified Baker's trademark "California cool" sound, a style that found a perfect foil in Freeman's clear, crisp pianism. Highlights include memorable interpretations of modern jazz classics such as Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce," Mulligan's "Line for Lyons," Tadd Dameron's "Lady Bird," and the popular standards "Stella by Starlight" and "All the Things You Are." An odd mix of straight-ahead jazz with a quartet and a few tracks with strings (just cellos). All of them sound good, its just strange hearing them together on one album. Here you will find the classic Lets Get Lost in 2 versions. In the more common version, Chet takes the first solo after the vocal. Here we hear an alternate take with Russ Freeman taking that solo. It's not really an alternate take, it is just edited differently (poorly, as typical with Pacific Jazz recordings). Let's Get Lost would become so connected with Chet, yet for some reason he rarely ever recorded that tune after this one session.

Many of these tracks were released on Pacific Jazz CD's: My Funny Valentine and Grey December. This is not the 2004 reissue with the 11th track.

Chet's trumpet playing is at least twice as good as one would realize before hearing him in the flesh. On records, he gives a fair impression of his feeling, his technical abilities and beautiful tone. But on stage, the shy boy witht he heavenly trumpet entices. As a bonus, added is what is left from the next entires in the Baker Twardzik discography, the only recorded fragmnets from the concerts in Mainz Germany and Zurich Switzerland. The Mainz concert presents Chet and Dick's only existing versions of Walkin' and All The Things You Are, as well as the second reading of Indian Summer.

[1955] - The Complete Barclay Recordings Of Chet Baker [4cd] [320vbr]

Emarcy released these 4 CD's of the complete 1955 - 1956 Paris Barclay recordings on CD in 1988. Volume 1 contains lot's of unusual Bob Zieff tunes introduced to Chet by pianist Dick Twardzik. The band is top-rate, the material is interesting, but with the exception of Sad Walk, not very memorable. Things start to pick up on the last tracks, when Chet is joined by a swinging septet (credited as "Chet Baker and his Orchestra"!?). The last tune, In Memory of Dick, is a tribute to Twardzik who died at age 24 during these sessions.

Volume 2 contains no Bob Zieff tunes here, just standards. Unlike the cool bop Chet was playing with Russ Freeman around this time, these are mostly ballads. He's backed by a fine band and they swing pretty.
The third of four CDs in this valuable series continues the documentation of Baker's first trip to Europe with three interesting sessions. Baker is teamed with tenor-saxophonist Bobby Jaspar and pianist Rene Urtreger for four selections, interacts with the tenor of Jean-Louis Chautemps and pianist Francy Boland on the next four songs and is finally heard with a fine French octet. Volume 4 contains alternate, unreleased takes from the famous 1955/56 recordings. The CD is filled with a lot of unnecessary tracks (do we really need 4 alternate takes of Tasty Pudding?). Volume 1 contains lot's of unusual Bob Zieff tunes introduced to Chet by pianist Dick Twardzik. The band is top-rate, the material is interesting, but with the exception of Sad Walk, not very memorable. Things start to pick up on the last tracks, when Chet is joined by a swinging septet (credited as "Chet Baker and his Orchestra"!?). The last tune, In Memory of Dick, is a tribute to Twardzik who died at age 24 during these sessions.

Unlike the cool bop Chet was playing with Russ Freeman around this time, these are mostly ballads. He's backed by a fine band and they swing pretty.

For those accustomed to hearing Chet Baker's lonely, mellow trumpet ebbing and flowing within small group surroundings, BIG BAND may come as a bit of a shock. Yet, such a massive backdrop actually frames Baker's cool tones with powerful support and varied textures. Recorded in the mid-'50s, Baker sounds strong, confident, and full of life. His solos on highly charged arrangements of such classics as "Tenderly," "Darn That Dream," and "Stella by Starlight" are superb. Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Phil Urso (tenor saxophone); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jimmy Bond (bass); Peter Littman (drums); Bill Loughbrough (tympani). Recorded at the Forum Theater, Los Angeles, California on July 24, 25 & 31, 1956. Includes original liner notes by Woody Woodward. This astounding live set was recorded with Chet Baker's regularly touring ensemble at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles in 1956, after the trumpeter's return from an extensive European tour. The group is incredibly in sync and agile on the many intricate arrangements. Of special note is the presence of percussionist Bill Loughbrough who contributes three performances on his unusual chromatic tympani, or "boobams," which are his own invention. Baker is self-assured and in excellent form here, blowing many fine solos in his classic "cool" style. Tenor man Phil Urso and pianist Bobby Timmons are in equally good form, supporting Baker with flawless precision and taste. Baker's only vocal performance comes on the Gerry Mulligan original "Line For Lyons." Other notable cuts include Mulligan's "Revelation," the Latin-esque "To Mickey's Memory," and Al Cohn's swinging "Music to Dance By." Taken as a whole, this set is a nice snapshot of Baker in performance at the peak of his early popularity.

Recorded with pianist Russ Freeman's ensemble in 1954 and 1956, this is the archetypal Baker release, and the first one to get if you're testing the waters. Baker sings standards (including "My Funny Valentine," of course) as if stepping out of an androgynous dream, although it would take another 20 years of hard living for his voice to take on otherworldly qualities. Relaxed West Coast swing such as this can't be duplicated today. In its sweetly melancholic post- war foreboding, this is a Mike Davis book set to music. "Sings" should be on the required listening list for any history class covering the city of L.A. --D. Strauss

Playboys is a 1956 jazz album featuring trumpeter Chet Baker and saxophonist Art Pepper.

The album was the third collaboration between Pepper and Baker, following the successes of The Route and Chet Baker Big Band. All three albums were recorded in 1956.

Playboys was issued on CD by Blue Note Records in 1998 under the name Picture of Heath after the fifth track (itself a reference to Jimmy Heath, composer of all but two of the tracks). The tracks themselves were presented in a slightly different order, starting with the new title track.

[1956] - Chet Baker And Bud Shank - Theme Music From The James Dean Story [192vbr]



The James Dean Story is a documentary that was made in the 1950s. It's very dated and slow-paced by today's standards, of interest only to historian documentarians and james dean fanatics. The soundtrack, however, is a little more accesable. This album is full of bebop jazz, with impressive trumpet and piano work. The music sets a perfect tone for the type of music often associated with James Dean's era (the mid 1950s). Although Dean is often associated with youthful rebellion and rock and roll, he actually preferred classical music and jazz (which were still the most popular types of music in America at the time of his death).
