Torrent description

amily woes are depicted in a humourous light in this sitcom starring Zhu Mimi as a matriarch who must now learn to live with her children and daughter-in-law when they all move in under one roof.

The Yang family lives in a semi-detached house. The eldest son, Da Fu is married and has begun to set up his own family. Daughter, Jiao Gui is also married. Only the retired old Mrs Yang, her third son Guang Rong and his wife from China, Wen Rou, as well as her youngest son De Hua live together in the house. It’s never easy for a mother and daughter-in-law to live under the same roof.

One night, Da Fu moves back home with his wife Mei Feng and their six year-old daughter Si Qi. Old Mrs Yang would have been very happy about her son and granddaughter moving home. But she is not pleased about her daughter-in-law Mei Feng moving back as well, because in the first place, Da Fu moved his family out on Mei Feng’s suggestion. Old Mrs Yang has never gotten over it.

It is not easy for any mother and daughter-in-law to get along well. The relationship will be fraught with ups and downs. Furthermore, old Mrs Yang is not just any old lady!

She used to work for a government department as a manager, governing her section with an iron fist. She never took ‘no’ for an answer, and never compromised. She demanded absolute obedience from her staff. After some time, she began to apply the same attitude at home. All her children had to obey her every word, and every matter at home had to be done her way. Even her late husband became 100% obedient!

Da Fu and Mei Feng met when he was in Taiwan for National Service training. It was love at first sight, and they got physically passionate in no time. Once, they were careless and she got pregnant. Under pressure from her family, Da Fu had to marry Mei Feng and bring her back to Singapore. After the wedding, they started building their own home and family with the birth of their daughter Si Qi (nicknamed Nan Nan), living in wedded bliss. Unfortunately, Da Fu is retrenched by his company. Left with no other choice, he takes on a low-paying job to make ends meet. To cut costs, he decides to rent their apartment out and move back home.

So there are more people in the Yang family again. The empty room is taken up, which affects Jiao Gui the most.

She works in a bank, and has gone through higher education. She is complacent in nature, and has no initiative. In terms of matters of the heart, she has not been very successful. Just when her biological clock sounds the alarm upon nearing 30 years of age, she meets a businessman who treats her relatively well. Thus, she marries him. The problem is, her husband Lawrence is away overseas on business all the time, leaving her alone at home with her lowly educated mother-in-law. The difference in lifestyle causes the two women to clash constantly. So, Jiao Gui runs away home to complain to her mother all the time, sometimes staying a few days. Now that her brother is back, she cannot stay in the room anymore. She blames Mei Feng for this, “Why doesn’t she get a job? If she can contribute, then they can move back to their apartment. Does she want to live off other people?” Tension builds between Jiao Gui and Mei Feng, causing all sorts of drama and problems.

In fact, Mei Feng is no pushover either. She has a sharp tongue. She is calculative, petty, and greedy. She is great at making sure her husband’s feelings for her never change. Her thrifty ways score points with old Mrs Yang, though it is the only good thing the old lady has to say about her. They often disagree only daily matters, especially over their different methods of bringing up Si Qi. Da Fu is caught in the middle, and is tired out by their constant bickering. There is no relief for him anywhere!

Another problematic couple is Guang Rong and his wife from China, Wen Rou. Guang Rong is a slacker, who doesn’t mind his brother’s return to the family home. He doesn’t care as long as he can still carry on living and eating in the house. It is Wen Rou who once commented straightforwardly that Da Fu and his family’s departure from the Yang family home was like Taiwan seeking independence, and their return now is like the return to mainland China. She does not mean any harm by this comment, but it is taken the wrong way by Mei Feng. Once, Mei Feng’s jewellery disappears, and she accuses Wen Rou of theft. The relationship between them get from bad to worse. The war of the century is on the brink of starting. Da Fu and Guang Rong have an emergency meeting to discuss how to diffuse the situation. What’s worse is old Mrs Yang and Jia Gui stick their noses in and cause trouble as well. The men are exasperated.

The one person who has stayed away from all the trouble at home is De Hua, the youngest son. He is the most playful and rebellious in the family, preferring to keep his distance. After graduating from university, he finds a job at an advertising company. His attitude towards life is – just get by. He has many lofty ideals in his head. In university, he studied Communication Studies, and considers himself gifted in the arts. Going around with a video camera all the time, he is always taking footages of everything around him. Once, he spent a whole day sprawled on the floor, shooting “The Life of an Ant”. He has many girlfriends at any one time, but does not want to get married. This is because of the examples he sees at home in his elder brothers. However, when love strikes, there is no way for him to escape. He gets to know a girl, Sammi, who works in a petrol kiosk. Thus, he goes there all the time to see her. Will he win her heart in the end?
