Before "Bird Up!" found a permanent home in our five-disk-changer, we will admit
that it sat for months, unreviewed, unappreciated and just plain unopened. We
thought, "Another bunch of DJs, turntablists, and latter-day funksters get
turned loose in the vaults of a jazz legend, Charlie Parker." There was US2
messing up "Blue Note," Thievery Corp (and the like) having their way with
"Verve," Jazzmatazz making jazz palatable for us kiddies with modern beats,
loops, scratches, and MCs. So we got around to listening to "Bird Up!" and,
well, son of a gun! If this ain't the dopest thing we've laid our ears on in
ages. The wide-ranging artists on this project don't treat us like children.
They re-construct Charlie Parker's music. We get Me'shell Ndegeocello's
sophisticated urban funk on "Relaxin' at Camarillo," Rob Swift of the X-
ecutioners making like Picasso on the turntables giving us an aural cubist
version of "Cheers." Serj Tankian (from System of a Down!) gets trippy on "Bird
of Paradise." Dan the Automator drops a couple of mind-blowing remixes--nay, re
-combinations--which are faves around here. The spirit of Charlie Parker is
remixed. His tunes are refocused, reunited, remembered and respected.

Bird Up: The Originals, the companion disc to Bird Up: The Charlie Parker Remix
Project, contains 11 remastered tracks recorded between 1945 and 1948. Even
though the running time could be longer, this budget disc sounds great and is
highly recommended to those unfamiliar with the brilliant bebop saxophonist and
his equally apt cohorts, including Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Red
Norvo, and John Lewis. While the Remix Project is interesting, this edition of
Bird Up is the real thing.

The idea of an album that remixes the Savoy output of Charlie Parker may be
horrifying for some, but before you join the purist mob take a gander at the
names involved. Producer Matthew Backer has picked quite a crew of tasteful
mavericks to remix the saxophonist, and Hal Willner's multiple appearances alone
pay respect to the man who made tribute albums exciting. Willner's Whoops, I'm
an Indian project turns "Salt Peanuts" into a musical genre-hopping wild ride
with the Kronos Quartet providing the screechy edge and Dr. John laying down
some boogie. It could have been a royal mess, but it isn't. Dan the Automator
bends the recordings with a smirk and funk, but he's totally outdone by the
turntables of the X-Ecutioners, who scratch right along with an especially hot
Parker solo. Me'Shell NdegéOcello plays some deep, intuitive bass to a rather
choppy "Relaxin' at Camarillo," and "All the Shadows of Nuff" finds Garth
Hudson's keyboards adding the needed lyrical touch to Willner's quick
juxtaposition of four separate Parker tunes. System of a Down's frontman, Serj
Tankian, provides the album's highlight, sounding like Tom Waits and Bono's love
child on the eerie and yearning rave-up "Bird of Paradise (Gone)." Naysayers
should hear RZA scatting along with Bird, El-P's trippy mix, or Hubert Laws'
expressive flute runs before dismissing the album entirely. Too many likeminded
productions with their echoes and crackles make the album easier to take in
small doses. Bird Up at least captures the innovative spirit of Charlie Parker,
doesn't do any damage to the icon of hip, and makes for an exciting listen.

Yes, Kate, you are a very good woman… then again, you may be the Antichrist.

—Doc Holliday to One-Eyed Kate in Tombstone (1993)

Depending on one’s perspective, Bird Up! Is the greatest thing since sliced
bread or the worst thing since Heaven’s Gate. The premise is provocative. The
urban music called jazz has been updated with the urban music of hip-hop and
techno/sampling. Sampling of jazz tunes is nothing new; jazz, particularly soul
jazz, has been broadly sampled by DJs. Why not remix Charlie Parker? Anthony
Braxton totally deconstructed the Parker canon on his Charlie Parker Project,
1993 (HatART) to adventuresome effect, albeit the old-fashioned way.

I allowed a close friend (not a jazz fan) to listen to Bird Up! and he suggested
that this music would be well suited for listening in a large metropolitan area
on a Walkman. Or better yet, a boom box. It's dense and crowded with sounds and
ideas that provoke a certain low hum of anxiety. Not necessarily a bad anxiety,
just the kind that surrounds change and evolution in the music – socially,
culturally, and otherwise. These are gritty urban takes on the high art of Bird
and none of the songs suffer for it. This trippy mix blends techno-hip-hop with
Parker recordings weaving in and out of the musical/creative maelstrom. "Now's
the Time," Night in Tunisia," and "Barbados" best illustrate this.

The end result makes one reconsider not just jazz or hip-hop, but all music. I
cannot say that this music is good or bad... it simply is. I would, however,
encourage even the most conservative listeners to pay attention to this disc. It
is inventive and re-creative— very much in the spirit of Parker.

It's usual to post comments only to complain about a torrent which doesn't work
in your configuration. It's normal, after a few hours/days downloading and
expecting a release, to feel deceived if it doesn't work properly, and
expressing this is legitimate.

I've often found one comment (negative) on a movie/CD downloaded by 2000+
people, and since that single negative feedback, people simply stop downloading
and therefore, sharing. But a few times it was due not to the torrent itself,
but to some issues on the downloader side (not updated codecs, misused
tools...), and that's unfair for the person who took the time to share it for
free.

IF YOU FIND THIS RELEASE DESERVES TO BE RECOMMENDED TO OTHERS, HELP BY DROPPING
A LINE AFTER YOU'VE CHECKED IT. This way, You'll help in keeping the torrent
alive, almost as much as keeping it in your HDD until a 1:1 ratio is
reached.
