This is a 24-bit/44.1 kHz transcription using high-end analog equipment of a performance by Ram Narayan of Raga Puria Kalyan on the sarangi, accompanied by Suresh Talwalkar on tabla. It was recorded in Stockholm on November 23, 1974, produced by Jörgen Adolfsson and Hans Isgren, engineered by Nils Edström, and released originally on LP by Amigo (AMLP 816). A recording of Ram Narayan playing Raga Puria Kalyan has been released on CD, but appears to be out of print. I don’t know if it’s the same recording.

The sarangi is a bowed string instrument with roughly the tonal range of a cello, but much shorter and with sympathy strings that enrich the timbre in ways that the performer can manipulate, depending on how those strings are tuned and which notes he emphasizes in his bowing. The sarangi has traditionally been used in Indian classical music to accompany vocal performances, but Ram Narayan was almost single-handedly responsible for establishing it as a solo instrument in its own right. He has made innumerable recordings, including two for the Nonesuch Explorer series that are not yet back in print but should eventually be if they continue with their re-releases from that series.

This is a vibrant, highly detailed recording that reveals every bit of the remarkable timbre of this beautiful instrument. The LP is in excellent condition, and there is virtually no tracking distortion at all. There are no notes to speak of on the LP cover.
