Lockup Special Investigation: Lake County Juvenile Justice - Michael, Ricardo, Miguel :

Eighteen year old Ricky is a regular in the juvenile justice system. Over the past four years, he has spent a

total of two hundred and sixty-six days in Lake County Juvenile, and more recently another sixteen months at a

residential placement facility in Nevada. When he didn't return to his placement in Nevada after a weekend home

pass, Ricky was picked up on a bench warrant. Though he is now eighteen and technically an adult, he will have

to face the juvenile court one final time. Seventeen year old Michael is back in detention for the third time

on suspicion of burglary. But there is a limit to what the courts can do when a juvenile continually reappears

at intake, seemingly worse off than the time before. Like Ricky and Michael, Miguel is nearing his eighteenth

birthday. Though they all face the prospect of graduating to the adult prison system, the only thing common

about Miguel is his juvenile record. Every time he's come in, he's come with heavy charges. But once he gets

there, he's focused, gets visitation, reads good books and shares them.
