"Ben Reynolds is most famously a member of Glasgow’s prog-folksters Trembling Bells (along with Alex Neilson and Lavinia Blackwall), whose new album on Honest Jons has been lauded by none other than Joe Boyd. On How Day Earnt Its Night, released on the estimable Tompkins Square, he extricates his guitar lines from that band’s extraordinarily baroque arrangements to leave a very fine Takoma school record indeed. You would never have known that under all that would be something as good as this.

The album revolves around a quite astonishing twelve minute multi-section title track. The first seven minutes are built around a maddening two note riff, onto which he hangs all kinds of circular and angular melodic runs, strings-a-buzzing and mind-a-blazing. This is suddenly curtailed by a couple of big, resonant notes, before he embarks on spiraling ragas, dragging the tempo down and then back up for a hugely impressive crescendo. You can’t help but be reminded of James Blackshaw’s earlier, unadorned guitar playing; this is passionate and impeccably played. After this dizzying demonstration, the languid “England” brings you back down to earth with its effortless, airy melodies, before we cross the pond with the sumptuous slide guitar of “The Virgin Knows”, which railroads the track across dusty plains to a finale of frenetic fingerpicking.

A glance at Reynolds’s website shows that as well as Trembling Bells, he is involved with a host of disparate concurrent projects, from from folk to psych to improv to electronics. How Day Earnt Its Night shows that however he chooses to clothe his music, at its heart is the playing of a sublimely talented individual.
