Harvey Korman: 1927 - 2008

It is with great sadness that I heard today of the passing of Harvey Korman. Harvey was an amazing comedian and actor. I will always fondly remember his multiple roles in the Carol Burnett Show which really showed what an incredibly versatile actor he was.

In tribute to this great actor, I am putting on the pilot of the Carol Burnett Show (aka Carol Burnett and Friends). The quality is not great but you will get a real sense of what kind of actor he was.

To Harvey\'s wife, Deborah Fritz, and his four children, I would like to extend my deepest condolences.

Rest in peace, Harvey!

Comedian Harvey Korman, a multiple-Emmy award winner best known for his work on \"The Carol Burnett Show\" and in comedies such as Blazing Saddles and The Pink Panther Strikes Again, died Thursday at the age of 81. According to a family statement issued by UCLA Medical Center, Korman reportedly suffered complications related to the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm he experienced four months ago.

Korman’s television career spans back to the early ‘60s, including small parts on such classic series as \"The Red Skelton Show\" and \"The Untouchables\". It was not until he began to appear in skits on \"The Danny Kaye Show\" that he became known for his dry delivery and ease with playing the second banana. Korman joined that show’s cast in 1964 and remained with it until its cancellation in 1967, the same year he joined the skit comedy series that made him a household name, \"The Carol Burnett Show.\" On \"Carol Burnett\" the lanky Korman’s claim to fame was playing the perfect straight man to the outrageous slapstick comedy of the other actors in the cast, but mainly Burnett and fellow cast member Tim Conway. They and the fourth member of the variety show\'s core ensemble, Vicki Lawrence, spoofed a number of iconic films and television series throughout the show’s run.

\"We were an ensemble, and Carol had the most incredible attitude,” Korman said in a 2005 Variety interview. \"I\'ve never worked with a star of that magnitude who was willing to give so much away.\'\'

Korman spent ten seasons on \"Carol Burnett” before leaving to helm his own series, \"The Harvey Korman Show\", which was quickly canceled. But the comedy actor soon parlayed his familiarity into a number of recognizable roles on series such as \"The Love Boat\", \"Roseanne\" and \"Mama’s Family\".

He also lent his voice to The Great Gazoo on \"The Flintstones\" in 1966, before finding fame on \"Carol Burnett.\" But it was his turn as Hedley Lamarr, a clumsy version a moustache-twirling villain in Mel Brooks\' Western satire Blazing Saddles, that film buffs may recall best. He also appeared in two other Brooks comedies, History of the World: Part I and High Anxiety, in addition to playing Professor Auguste Balls in Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther.

More recently Korman partnered with Conway for a live show, \"Tim Conway and Harvey Korman: Together Again,\" which toured the country. He is survived his daughters Katherine and Laura, his wife Deborah Fritz, and two children from his previous marriage to Donna Ehlert, Maria and Christopher.

Lanky, popular TV comedy veteran with a flair for broad comic characterizations, who shone for a decade as leading man and second banana par excellence on \"The Carol Burnett Show\" (1967) but failed to find much success in his own projects. A persistent TV presence since the early 1960s, Korman\'s first big break was a stint as a featured performer on \"The Danny Kaye Show\" (1963), a lively musical variety series. Here Korman began working in the format which he would soon master--providing sturdy support to a multi-talented star in a wide variety of comedy sketches.

Boasting large, expressive features and a wonderfully mutable voice, Korman could play a wide assortment of characters. Perhaps his first classic characterization was provided for \"The Flintstones\" (1960) wherein he was the distinctively snooty voice of The Great Gazoo, a little helmeted space man from the future consigned to the Earth\'s past in punishment for his crimes. Korman garnered four Emmys for his work with \'Carol Burnett\' over the years. Her show never recovered from his departure in 1977 to pursue other projects.

Ironically Korman would never again find such a successful showcase for his talents though he certainly tried, appearing in several busted pilots and short-lived sitcoms. Like \'Dan Aykroyd\', a later somewhat comparable talent, he fared best in sketch comedy. Almost exclusively a comic actor, he stretched a bit to play straight man Bud Abbott opposite Buddy Hackett\'s Lou Costello in the disappointing TV biopic Bud and Lou (1978) (TV). Korman also directed and/or produced sitcom episodes and TV comedy specials.

An occasional actor in films, Korman made his feature debut with a supporting role in The Last of the Secret Agents? (1966). Several film roles followed until he gained his widest exposure with a major supporting role in \'Mel Brooks\'\'s classic Western spoof Blazing Saddles (1974). Korman also fared well in Brooks\' High Anxiety (1977) and History of the World: Part I (1981). Korman acted in two 1994 features: the blockbuster live-action version of The Flintstones (1994) (providing the voice of the Dictabird) and the poorly received but lavishly produced Radioland Murders (1994).
