About Marly Mar

In less
than 10 years, recording artist Marly Mar has elevated the independent
music community in South Carolina by leaps and bounds. Starting his
career in the business in 1998, when there was less then a handful of
artist representing his home state, Mar has released 12 projects to
date. Included are a compilation which showcased the best Hip-Hop
artists his hometown of Charleston has to offer; and an independent
film and accompanying soundtrack. Most new artists with a career as
accomplished as Marly Mar's would attribute their success, albeit
reluctantly, to a local “hero” of sorts – typically the first artist
from their neighborhood or region to “do it big.” But in Charleston,
Marl is that artist.

At the
age of 16, Marl was introduced to the rap game by a co-worker who,
recognizing Mar's raw talent took him to the Charleston studios of Big
Business Entertainment. Though it was obvious that Marl was more
talented than the indie label's entire roster, they passed up on the
opportunity to offer him a deal, stating that his lyrical content was
“too street.” Determined to prove his value to the game, Marly Mar
started writing feverishly, using his boys on the block as a sounding
board. But he was still just a kid with a dream, until a twist of fate
brought him to live with his older sister. At that time her fiancé,
Dennis Flemming, saw enough in Mar to help along his early career. He
took his new protégé to 21st Century Studios where, with the
help of their in-house producers, Marl went to work converting his
seven pads of lyrics into his first of many albums. Unfortunately,
Flemming fell victim to the criminal justice system before the
completion of Mar's debut, Self-Made Man, which was released in
early 2002. Having learned the ins and outs of the music business on
his own, Mar pushed his aptly titled debut with no help, selling an
impressive 5,000 copies and creating a local hit with his single
“Ack-A-Donkey.” The remix to that song, which was released the
following year, is still in heavy rotation on Charleston's airwaves.
With the support of a fan base created even before the release of Self-Made Man
– thanks in part to weekly performances at local venues Millennium,
Kilimanjaro, and the Armory – Marl was able to parlay his success into
opportunities for other artists. He followed up his debut with Marly Mar presents Flossin' on Them Haters,
a compilation showcasing ten of the best artists representing each area
of his hometown. With that release, Mar expanded his following even
further, racking up sales in Columbia, Orangeburg, Fayetteville and
Charlotte, NC; and as far as Atlanta, GA; not to mention his growing
popularity across all of the college campuses and towns in South
Carolina. In 2003, he added three new songs to his popular
“Ack-A-Donkey” remix to release the CEO of the Year EP. And to
prove that title, he started bringing new artists into the fold,
signing Kilo Da Villain, Autillary, Belo Da Push and Mr. Digital, all
of whom have been equally well received in the streets. To date,
ChuckTown Ballers Production, founded by Marly Mar and partner Dennis
Flemming in 2002, boasts close to 35,000 units sold completely
independently.

As a
business man and an artist, Marly Mar knows nothing more than being the
best and always striving to surpass his last effort. Sure he could
focus solely on himself, using his versatility, lyrical ability and
unique sound not only to revitalize Hip-Hop, but also make himself a
household name in the process. But he'd rather build a movement,
continuing his pioneering efforts to bring Charleston to the world. And
the world is definitely starting to take notice.
