20/20’s John Stossel takes a Libertarian viewpoint and challenges the validity of a number of government ideas he finds wrong. Thanks to the OL.

As a public school social studies teacher, I am absolutely handcuffed in what materials I am allowed to present, and what ideas or opinions we are allowed to discuss. I would love to show the following John Stossel special, but it would never be allowed.

Let me pose just a few points that I notice from this special, albeit I wish he was more journalistic and less sensationalistic. I guess Stossel is the Libertarian answer to Michael Moore. Oh, and before I get yet another comment claiming I am pushing an agenda – OF COURSE I AM! Fiscal conservative over here! The whole government-tends-to-suck-by-definition agenda. See how ticky-tack laws designed to help almost NEVER do. Sure do COST a ton, though, don’t they?

• Why is a popular president and his policies getting so much less scrutiny than an unpopular one? Do people honestly believe that THIS administration will be the first one in history not to use buzzwords and lie its ass off?

• In the stories on the private roads and the medicinal marijuana, do you see the blind hypocrisy of both the left and right? Both object to entrepreneurs making ‘a profit’ on any issue the left or right doesn’t like, but don’t object to profits if they do approve of the issue. Do you also notice how quick BOTH sides are to ban something for all of us if THEY don’t like it?

• Consider the rampant disregard / ignorance of the concepts of federalism and state’s rights displayed here. Both sides are just thrilled to use the FEDERAL government to crush you if they cannot achieve the same with STATE government. The left hates state’s right when southern ‘rednecks’ vote for right-to-work legislation, and the right hates state’s rights when California ‘hippies’ vote to legalize medicinal pot. Hey Washington! Howzabout letting the locals make their own damned decisions? Especially when non-biased research PROVES that your ‘moral’ decision defies all logical proof and reason?

• How many times does history have to demonstrate that bubbles in the market tend to be self correcting before people will learn that artificial meddling by government tends to extend and worsen economic problems? I find it beyond ironic that BILL MAHER of all people is so thrilled with these stimulus proposals, when he is the one who said back in the 1990s that ‘Americans like their solutions fast and they like them stupid.”

• What happens to Charlie Lynch (the medical pot dispenser) is despicable, and I’m sure most people agree. However, has it occurred to many people that a number of the people getting popped for being evil corporate greed-heads are likewise victims of a politically motivated prosecutorial nightmare looking for scapegoats? Remember Mike Milken from the 80s? Turns out the laws were so ridiculous and contradictory that its hard to explain exactly what he did that was wrong (I said WRONG, not illegal. The two are NOT synonymous.) So he does two years on jail for no clear reason and then does more once he gets out to cure cancer than the CDC has. Just looking for consistency, you left and right idealists.

• As typified on the pre-K segment, have you noticed how people that are married to the BELIEF that an idea/program either must or must not work will disregard and cherry pick evidence that isn’t kind to their belief?

• Want to deal with illegal immigration? Well, we can enter a complex series of socio-economic moves to address the situation, or we can build a fence! You know, the fence Israel uses is patrolled every 10 minutes – every inch of it. And THEY are trying to keep out bombers and armed killers, and even Israel admits their fence may only be about 50% effective. For the US to build a similar fence to THAT one and patrol it the same way would cost an estimated 15 billion annually. But building a fence is simplistic, so it’s popular.

• The single biggest thing here that chaps my butt is that these questions raised by Stossel and similar people go so uniformly UNANSWERED and unaddressed by both the left and the right. The parties decide on their versions of reality, so do their partisans, and these very logical questions are simply ignored. At least such diversionary topics as abortion and flag burning get debated. These? Not so much. And we libertarian types are simply dismissible whackjobs.
