Bosom Buddies Starring Tom Hanks & Peter Scolari 6 Episodes ISO dvd-r From 1995 Paramount Best of VHS release Vols. 1-3
Before Tom Hanks was Forrest Gump, an Astronaut in Space, or a Castaway on a deserted island, he was Buffy, alter ego of Kip & best friend of Henry (played by Peter Scolari) also known as Hildegarde. Both men had to masquerade as women in order to keep their dirt cheap apartment at the Susan B. Anthony Residence Hotel for WOMEN ONLY. They live across the hall from Amy, a co-worker at the Ad Agency they all work at. Amy (played wonderfully by the recently deceased Wendie Jo Sperber) Amy was not only madly in love with Henry & but was the ONLY person who knew Kip & Henry's secret.
Hanks & Scolari's performances were brilliant together--they had great timing, chemistry & and Ad-Lib'd most of their lines which usually wound up in the final cut of the episode. Their on-screen presence has been compared to "Laurel & Hardy", "Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis", "Bob Hope & Bing Crosby" & even "Lucy Ricardo & Ethel Mertz". Unfortunatly the series lasted only for two years, however TV Guide named "Bosom Buddies" (along with another great TV show "Star Trek") as one of the "Top 50 TV Shows Canceled Before Their Prime" (BB ranked at #5)
As the later opening theme goes narated by Kip & Henry later in the series:
Henry: When we first moved to New York we had a great apartment that was dirt cheap.
Kip: And we found out why it was so cheap.
(cuts to a shot of a wrecking ball demolishing their building)
Henry: Our friend Amy said there was a great apartment in her building.
Kip: Dirt cheap - BUT it's a hotel for women. OOOKAY--We made one adjustment.
Henry: Now these other ladies know us as Buffy and Hildegarde.
Kip: BUT they ALSO know us as Kip and Henry, Buffy and Hildy's brothers.
(cuts to shot of Hanks with Donna Dixon)
Kip: I am-aah crazy about the blonde.
(cuts to shot of Henry typing wearing a dress)
Henry: This experience is gonna make a great book.
Kip: See? It's all perfectly normal. (Split screen shot of Kip & Henry waving back to Buffy & Hildegarde)
When the show was originally aired, the opening theme was Billy Joels "My Life". This has been replaced with a new song "Shake Me Loose" sung by Stephanie Mills which WAS to have been the original theme song to the show but was replaced at the;last minute before it aired to the Billy Joel song.
These episodes were taken from the limited VHS editions released in 1995 --because of the original source material, i rate the video quality 8.5/10. All episodes are Closed-Captioned for the Hearing Impaired. The Pilot episode was camera filmed & subsequent episodes were video-taped.
