Directly following his adventurous Another Hand, some listeners were disappointed with the fact that David Sanborn did not permanently switch from R&B/crossover to creative jazz. However, this CD is generally quite appealing and takes some chances within its genre. Although bassist Marcus Miller is once again an important collaborator, the emphasis is on "real" instruments, most notably the organ of Ricky Peterson; other musicians in the backup groups include John Purcell on various reeds, trumpeter Randy Brecker, drummer Steve Jordan and guest Eric Clapton, who takes a guitar solo on "Full House." The most unusual selection is the final cut, a version of Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin'" that finds Sanborn, Miller, Peterson and Jordan joined by the avant-garde trumpeter Herb Robertson. Overall, this is an above-average effort from the highly influential altoist. ~ Scott Yanow

I've heard bits & pieces of several Sanborn albums in the past & must admit I never cared much for his music. So, I was totally unprepared for the thoroughly upbeat & enjoyable music I heard on this cd. With great playing & arrangements by Marcus Miller, funky B-3 backing by Ricky Peterson, a tight horn section featuring Randy Brecker & even a nice solo by Eric Clapton on one song, a five star rating was a no-brainer. There are lots of blues, funky grooves, brass & extended solos with Sanborn "Upfront" on most of the selections while still allowing time for the supporting cast to showcase their talents. As for negatives, I have to side with the anti Bang Bang group. It's not that I dislike the song, it just doesn't seem to fit. Another minor criticism - I have been unable to find the times of each song listed anywhere on the cd. Overall - a very impressive effort. ~ M.P.Wright

I've always been a fan of David Sanborn after hearing him for years playing on Carly Simon's records, such as, "You belong to me," and his wonderfull Alto Sax solo on "Blue of Blue," from her "Torch" album. When I heard "Band Band," I had to get this tape. I have to admit,I'm not a big fan of a complete Instrumental record, but I did enjoy this one, especially "Hey,Snakes," and the mellow number,"Benny." ~ Bob Waskiewicz
