Bei Nightwish handelt es sich um eine der erfolgreichsten Metalbands Finnlands und galt mit der ausgebildeten Opernsängerin Tarja Turunen als stilprägend für ihr Genre Symphonic Metal. Die Gründung erfolgte im Jahr 1996 durch die Bandmitglieder Tuomas Holopainen (Keyboard), Emppu Vuorinen (Gitarre, Bass) und Tarja Turunen. Ende 2005 folgte die Trennung von der Sängerin. Im Mai 2007 wurde schließlich die neue Sängerin Anette Olzon vorgestellt. Die grten Erfolge und die besten Chartplatzierungen erzielte die Band mit den Studioalben Once (2004) und Dark Passion Play (2007). Beide Werke erreichten in Deutschland und Finnland die Pole-Position.
