First, and foremost, let’s cover the obvious: Windmill can easily be compared to a lot of bands. While I’ve read people compare his voice to The Flaming Lips to me it sounds more like Daniel Smith (of Danielson Family fame) or if you want to go overboard and bring the boat of praise you could say he sounds like Neil Young in his prime. The music? Well, this one is easy. Piano, light guitar and orchestral arrangements point in the direction of The Arcade Fire without a doubt. To stop there, which most people will, would be unfair as this album may be comparable to other artists this may be one of the better albums you’ll hear this year. There is a fine line between being influenced and being a rip off artist. Luckily, Windmill falls in the former not the latter. It’s easy to point out likeness in any band and write them off. The only thing I would write off about this album is that it is probably playing at your local Urban Outfitters location to the beat of retardo hipsters purchasing overly expensive accessories. Put the influences and hipster attraction aside, this is Windmill.
