Spiritual High (1999) New Age / Ambient / World Fusion / Rhythmic

"Spiritual High" is a truly amazing collection of some of the biggest names in new age/ambient and world-influenced music. This moody, rhythmic and trance-ambient album takes the listener on a fantastic spiritual journey and will definitely appeal to fans of Enigma, Deep Forest, Pilgrimage, or B-tribe.

A BRILLIANT COLLECTION. THIS SHOULD BE IN THE COLLECTION OF EVERY NEW AGE MUSIC LOVER.

Wholesome work. Brilliant collection. Delight for the new age music lover. All these in a new Earthtone Records collection named Spiritual High. The compilers of the collection did their best: here we have not only a collection of perfect compositions by the most various musicians, both recording on the Earthtone Records and on other labels (New Earth Records and White Cloud) plus two works presented personally by two remarkable new age artists Kamal and Karunesh. Spiritual High can be distinguished of all new age music collections, which I have heard in the past, most of all by its wholeness, where every next composition catches up the mood of the preceding one and where the music flows smoothly form one theme to another one. The album created good surrounding; it is melodious and deep.

Spiritual High is opened by a very beautiful composition by Kamal, Shakuhachi Tales, sounding something cosmic. The electronic decoration does not overload a listener, but creates light and pleasant background. This composition is followed by Alibaba by Karunesh with a bright rhythmical basis and Oriental tunes. The album continues with the composition Truth About Humans by an artist having the pseudonym Govinda, whose music is a rumbling mixture of trance-ambient electronic music with Indian folk. After this,Cybertribe joins in (a composition entitled Voices ). This is a successful project by New Earth Records, where electronic basis, close to Enigma are connected with buzzing sounds by the Australian eucalyptus tubes digeridoo.

Then follows a whole series of Earthtone Records artists compositions, beginning with soft with jazz additiontheme Uktena (from the American Indian project, Stonecoat), melodically perfect Escape To Reality by Mars Lasar, through dramatically-mystical History Of The Sandman of the group F.R.E.U.D. to rhythmically-singing Blossoms From India performed by Ginkgo Garden and covering, based on Celtic folklore composition Enchantment by group Alkaemy. In general, Spiritual High does not contain any weak compositions. Good words can be said about every one of these. But even among these compositions, one can be really distinguished. This is Red Rhythm Dragon from the famous album Feet In The Soil by James Asher. What rich drums and a sparky, fiery rhythm! In his music James Asher has united the things which could seem unconnectible: African drums and Australian digeridoo.

I strongly advise you to find and listen to this album. Spiritual High is one of those projects, which should be in the collection of every true new age music lover!

What an awesome CD full of gorgous world, electronic compositions. I would consider this CD to Earthtone Collection Two but with a stronger Middle Eastern twist. This CD is well above any of the Pure Moods CD. They are good CDs but there is even more than what any of those compilations offer.

Shakuhachi Tales by Kamal is a very dark, electronic, misty, ambient track with a very cloudy eerie sound and haunting flutes. The electronic sound effects at the beginning and ending are absolutely haunting. Ali Baba by Karunesh is an 8 and a half minute track with exotic, drums, flutes, and Sanskrit chants to give a very haunting sound. This song is similar to Shakuhachi Tales only a bit brighter. Truth About Humans by Govinda is a very haunting track with a very strong Middle Eastern sound with a Middle Eastern violin. Voices From A Distant Planet by Cybertribe has a more Australian sound and Aboriginal chants. Uktena by Stonecoat is a Native American influenced track with a brooding atmosphere and a really cool beat. Escape To Reality by Mars Lasar is absolutely powerful and awesome. It has a much more spacey sound and a strobe-light sounding guitar riff sample from the Smiths 1983 hit How Soon Is Now. This song could almost make a dent on the pop charts. History Of he Sandman has a much more electronic/classical sound with haunting Gregorian Chants, gorgoues violin, and beautiful vocals. One to enjoy on a dark rainy evening. Blossoms From India by Gingko Garden is a jazzier song with a much more Indian sound with a Sitar and bizarre violins and a awesome chant. Enchantment by Alkaemy is a somber track with a more Celtic twist. It's a very beautiful song. Parada by Marcome is a much more Enya-esque song with haunting vocals and thundering drums. It's a very eerie yet kind of Dori-Caymmi-esque song(Dori Caymmi is a Brazilian guitarist. His Kicking Cans LP is great). Medicine Man is a more Mayan Central American influenced with plucky soudnign instruments and a very jungle like sound. This is one to enjoy on a trip to the Amazon. Frog Dancing by David Anthon Clark is a return to the more Australian sound that was on Track 4 by Cybertribe only this track is probably easier to get into. I love the flute ending. Red Rhythm Dragon by James Asher is much more intense and has a far more traditional sound. If you like Peter Gabriels Passion or Passion Sources you might enjoy this song. Ring Of Gold is a very Mayan, Aztec sounding song with bizarre voice effects and many Myan instruments to give this song a very jungle like sound. Alegria by Potschs Potchska is another jungle like sounding song similar to Ring Of Gold only not wuite as jungle sounding. A good song to end the CD with.

This CD is one to include in any world music lovers collection. It is more powerful than any of the Pure Moods CDs. I enjoy all of these songs on this CD unlike the Pure Moods where I sometimes skip some tracks.

Earthtone's Spiritual High compilation is devoted to the sort of meditative yet eclectic ambient/dance/world music fusion pioneered by Enigma, Deep Forest, and their ilk. Featured artists include Kamal, Karunesh, Govinda, James Asher, Brent Lewis, Alkaemy, Ginkgo Garden, and more.
