mp3 | 256 kbps | 2003 | 61 min | 112 mb
Genre: World, Ethnic, Fusion

Product Description
Drums on Fire is a collaboration between two master drummers from two corners of the world--British James Asher and Indian Sivamani. Asher's driving percussion, Sivamani's ecstatic rhythms, and occasional melodic flutes, saxes and guitars create an album with both pulse and heart. Features dozens of rhythm-producing instruments that range from djembe, bazouki and taiko to buckets, birdcalls and Sivamani's own chant-scat.

"Drums on Fire is a journey through the dynamic and exciting interplay of rhythm as jointly created by Indian master drummer Sivamani and world musician James Asher. Vocals, flute, violin, guitar and sax join Sivamani's rhythmic heat, whilst James' keyboards and production mastery set the fires firmly ablaze. The global interplay of Indian and European musical styles is further enhanced by chunky but crystal clear sound." ~james-asher.co.uk

This new release is the highly anticipated release with James Asher combining his creative force with world renowned drum wizard Sivamani.

In November 2001, Sivamani was in England for another show at the Royal Festival Hall and James seized the chance to propose a joint project. For their first collaboration, they co-wrote “Amma,” which appeared on the CD Shaman Drums (enhanced by the rich earthy voice of Christine Collister, who also sings on the first track of this album) and available from New Earth Records. The people at New Earth Records were dazzled by the collaboration between James and Sivamani, and supportive of the idea of a follow-up album in the same spirit.

Sivamani has added his unique brand of percussion to the work of dozens of artists, including Zakir Hussain, Billy Cobham, Grover Washington, Jr., Shankar, Ginger, and Hollywood star Steven Segal. Sivamani is one of India’s best-known and most colorful percussionists with a sparkle, presence and charisma that is unmatched in the entertainment world.

James hopes that listeners will derive as much pleasure from listening to this album as he and Sivamani had making it. This was a collaboration whose fun and warmth transformed it into a great adventure.

"Rhythmsticks" is an annual event on London'sSouthbank. For about ten days each year, musicians from all over the world display their percussion skills in an International celebration of drumming. It was here a few years ago, that Asher met Sivamani

Surrounded by drums, tot-toms, timbalas, tablas, shimes, gongs, cymbals, and a host of soundmakers, the superb musician electrified his audience with virtuoso skill, profound joy, and playful humor.

"We were transfixed. Time stood still. It was a moment of sheer joy," James recalls.

For their first collaboration, James and Sivamani co-wrote "Amma" which appeared on the CD Shaman Drums.

Drums on Fire represents the maturity of the relationship between these two master drummers, from two corners of the world. Asher's driving percussion, Sivamani's ecstatic rhythms and occasional melodic flutes, saxes, and guitars create an album with both pulse and heart. Theis album is monumental in it's originality and truth. if you like to move, to dance, to shake, you will love this music. If you can sit still to it, you're in a class all by yourself.

Customer Review - "Having sat down in a stressed out state, totally shattered from a hard days work in the busy city of London, I was put into a total mode of relaxation. This compilation of tracks by these two truly inspirational characters allowed me to have the greatest hour of rest that I have had in my life. It controls both sides of music; the traditional Indian music along with the Western style of music. This is the reason why I myself enjoyed it so much as I got a feel of being in both worlds at the same time. The title of the album sums up the CD totally. The way Sivamani plays the drums is unlike anyone that I have ever heard before in my life. He makes the person listening feel as if they can completely trust him, and let him guide the way through his music. The music is amazing. There are no words in it so it is totally up to you how you interprate the music. I actually felt that I was sitting in a meditating position surrounded by a circle of fire. I could not see or hear the past, present or future. I was in a deep yet relaxed mode of concentration. I recomend this album to everyone. It is suitable for anyone as can be interpreted in many ways."

James Asher joins forces with the mighty Sivamani in his most colorful, rhythm-driven work to date. A triumphant and tireless hour of compulsive rhythms that never stops to catch its breath. Drums on Fire will have you dancing 'til you drop! Written by Peter Manzi, New Age Voice

Great melodic beats - pulsing drums. If drum beats can be melodic - this album shows that. Two great gurus of the drums Sivamani - with his ecstatic beats, vedic chantics to add a mood to the music, crazy one-offs with the other great guru James Asher who with his own pulsing beats creates a superb album.

And inspite of a whole album of drum beats - it doesn't bore you in the least. The mood changes totally across the album to revive and keep up the interest in listening intently and marvel at the fluidity of the pair.

There are occasional melodic tunes too - with flutes and other instruments. But best of all is Sivamani's rapid fire chants and his vocal beats that he syncronises with the actual drums. Written by Nilanjan "nilch" from Somerset, NJ United States

DRUMS ON FIRE is the result of a collaboration between UK keyboardist and musical conceptualist James Asher and Indian master drummer Sivamani. There is a tribal quality to this music that simplifies the virtuosic inclinations of most classical Indian styles. This music is also spiritually based, but does not adhere to the rules of the raga or to other classical forms.

DRUMS ON FIRE is both primitive and celestial. "Raindance" combines atmospheric keyboard swirls with a stark guitar melody, distant vocal musings, and thick percussive textures. "Treetops" moves in a similar vein, though this piece is more dance-oriented, given the throbbing bass drum and pulsating keyboard effects. Conversely, "Lakeside" is subtle and lyrical. This selection features the singing of Sivamani, who employs Eastern modes and many exotic turns of phrase. All the while, Asher's ethereal keyboards whirr magically around him. DRUMS ON FIRE is penetrating music that exists in a class with various tribal styles, and other spiritually based New Age albums. One gets the sense that these nine tracks were the result of intuition more than musical acumen, though Asher and Sivamani do display formidable skill throughout.

If you want more of such ecstatic intrumentation and percussion in particular - should check out "Blazing Drums" which has some more masters in it like Trilok Gurtu, Kale Karsh etc.

Drums & Didgeridoo & Synthesizers, August 15, 2004 By James Hutchinson (Lincoln, NE USA)

The first song is my least favorite as it reminds me too much of the Trance Ambient music of the 90's. The remainder of the songs are great fun. I'm a fan of Didgeridoo music and there are several selections with just drums and didge. I love the way that interesting percussion instruments are layered into the songs--different bells, symbols, gongs, wooden blocks, shamen drums. The percussion is driving but not boring or monotonous. There are New Age sounding pieces with beautiful melodies and world music with exotic instruments. This is the best CD I've bought recently.

A potent collection of the best of James Asher's earth-flavoured rhythms, including an unpublished bonus track featuring Indian master drummer Sivamani.

Reviews

Ecstatic trance dance music of the highest caliber is offered in the powerful new release by percussionist-extraordiniare, James Asher. Making use of a wide range of percussive instruments, didgeridoo, keyboards, tribal chant and god knows what, James creates a cacophony of sounds and rhythms that are deeply moving and quite infectious. As the movement begins and the rhythms build, a primal connection with the earth broadens and intensifies, taking the listener deep into the mystical, musical core of Gaia herself. In the midst of this focused abandon, ecstasy begins to filter up through the feet, then the legs, the spine, arms, torso, neck and by the time it reaches the eyes there is nothing else in the awareness except the indescribable rapture of total, earthly bliss. Better yet, this vehicle of bliss is completely legal, non-addictive and it's frequent use has been proven to cause weight loss! All right, I made up that part about weight loss because I got a little carried away by the music - but that's a good thing! -Musical Soundscapes, Aug 2002

James Asher

Spanning three decades, James Asher's music career began with a long stint composing non-commercial music for soundtracks and library pieces. After deciding to delve deeper and make more serious compositions, he released his commercial debut, The Great Wheel, in 1990. The album reached number 13 on the new age chart and remained on the charts for about two years. After releasing his 1993 album, Globalarium, on Silver Wave Records, he signed with New Earth Records, who issued the majority of his recordings for the remainder of the '90s. Stylistically, Asher's compositions fell into two camps -- percussion-driven ethnic fusion best displayed by his Feet in the Soil and Feet in the Soil 2 records, and gentler works with a more classic new age sound like his 1995 album, Ocean of Stars. Two years later, Asher issued Pemulwuy, which was named in celebration for a strong, legendary Aborigine. He returned to Indian world beats on 1998's Tigers of the Raj, and 1999's Coulours of Trance highlighted Asher's fondness for the poetry of Madeleine Doherty. In the following years he would remix and repackage Tigers of the Raj twice, deliver a sequel to Feet in the Soil, and release his first collaboration with Indian drummer Sivamani (2002's Shaman Drums.) ~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide

Shaman Drums A potent collection of the best of James Asher's earth-flavoured rhythms, including an unpublished bonus track featuring Indian master drummer Sivamani.

Customer Review - "A greatest hits collection from earthly instrumentalist James Asher. Percussion-driven tribal works are Asher's bag and this multicultural collection shows the artist at his best. 12 adrenaline-pumping slices of Shamanic bliss await listeners, each a lively swirl of beats and textures from a verity of cultures, including Africa, India, and Native America. One of the album's principal highlights is the previously unreleased opening track 'Amma', an ethno-electric kaleidoscope of groove that features Indian master drummer Sivamani. Other strong points include the didgeridoo-flavored 'Red Rhythm Dragon' and the enchanting Asian 'Temple Gates'."
