Product Details

This new release is the highly anticipated release with James Asher combining his creative force with world renowned drum wizard Sivamani. In November 2001, Sivamani was in England for another show at the Royal Festival Hall and James seized the chance to propose a joint project. For their first collaboration, they co-wrote “Amma,” which appeared on the CD Shaman Drums (enhanced by the rich earthy voice of Christine Collister, who also sings on the first track of this album) and available from New Earth Records. The people at New Earth Records were dazzled by the collaboration between James and Sivamani, and supportive of the idea of a follow-up album in the same spirit.

"'Rhythmsticks' is an annual event on London'sSouthbank. For about ten days each year, musicians from all over the world display their percussion skills in an International celebration of drumming. It was here a few years ago, that Asher met Sivamani.

Surrounded by drums, tot-toms, timbalas, tablas, shimes, gongs, cymbals, and a host of soundmakers, the superb musician electrified his audience with virtuoso skill, profound joy, and playful humor.

'We were transfixed. Time stood still. It was a moment of sheer joy,' James recalls.
For their first collaboration, James and Sivamani co-wrote 'Amma' which appeared on the CD Shaman Drums.

Drums on Fire represents the maturity of the relationship between these two master drummers, from two corners of the world. Asher's driving percussion, Sivamani's ecstatic rhythms and occasional melodic flutes, saxes, and guitars create an album with both pulse and heart. Theis album is monumental in it's originality and truth. if you like to move, to dance, to shake, you will love this music. If you can sit still to it, you're in a class all by yourself."

Drums & Didgeridoo & Synthesizers, August 15, 2004 By James Hutchinson (Lincoln, NE USA)

The first song is my least favorite as it reminds me too much of the Trance Ambient music of the 90's. The remainder of the songs are great fun. I'm a fan of Didgeridoo music and there are several selections with just drums and didge. I love the way that interesting percussion instruments are layered into the songs--different bells, symbols, gongs, wooden blocks, shamen drums. The percussion is driving but not boring or monotonous. There are New Age sounding pieces with beautiful melodies and world music with exotic instruments. This is the best CD I've bought recently.

A potent collection of the best of James Asher's earth-flavoured rhythms, including an unpublished bonus track featuring Indian master drummer Sivamani.

Reviews

Ecstatic trance dance music of the highest caliber is offered in the powerful new release by percussionist-extraordiniare, James Asher. Making use of a wide range of percussive instruments, didgeridoo, keyboards, tribal chant and god knows what, James creates a cacophony of sounds and rhythms that are deeply moving and quite infectious. As the movement begins and the rhythms build, a primal connection with the earth broadens and intensifies, taking the listener deep into the mystical, musical core of Gaia herself. In the midst of this focused abandon, ecstasy begins to filter up through the feet, then the legs, the spine, arms, torso, neck and by the time it reaches the eyes there is nothing else in the awareness except the indescribable rapture of total, earthly bliss. Better yet, this vehicle of bliss is completely legal, non-addictive and it's frequent use has been proven to cause weight loss! All right, I made up that part about weight loss because I got a little carried away by the music - but that's a good thing! -Musical Soundscapes, Aug 2002

James Asher

Spanning three decades, James Asher's music career began with a long stint composing non-commercial music for soundtracks and library pieces. After deciding to delve deeper and make more serious compositions, he released his commercial debut, The Great Wheel, in 1990. The album reached number 13 on the new age chart and remained on the charts for about two years. After releasing his 1993 album, Globalarium, on Silver Wave Records, he signed with New Earth Records, who issued the majority of his recordings for the remainder of the '90s. Stylistically, Asher's compositions fell into two camps -- percussion-driven ethnic fusion best displayed by his Feet in the Soil and Feet in the Soil 2 records, and gentler works with a more classic new age sound like his 1995 album, Ocean of Stars. Two years later, Asher issued Pemulwuy, which was named in celebration for a strong, legendary Aborigine. He returned to Indian world beats on 1998's Tigers of the Raj, and 1999's Coulours of Trance highlighted Asher's fondness for the poetry of Madeleine Doherty. In the following years he would remix and repackage Tigers of the Raj twice, deliver a sequel to Feet in the Soil, and release his first collaboration with Indian drummer Sivamani (2002's Shaman Drums.) ~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide

Shaman Drums A potent collection of the best of James Asher's earth-flavoured rhythms, including an unpublished bonus track featuring Indian master drummer Sivamani.

Customer Review - "A greatest hits collection from earthly instrumentalist James Asher. Percussion-driven tribal works are Asher's bag and this multicultural collection shows the artist at his best. 12 adrenaline-pumping slices of Shamanic bliss await listeners, each a lively swirl of beats and textures from a verity of cultures, including Africa, India, and Native America. One of the album's principal highlights is the previously unreleased opening track 'Amma', an ethno-electric kaleidoscope of groove that features Indian master drummer Sivamani. Other strong points include the didgeridoo-flavored 'Red Rhythm Dragon' and the enchanting Asian 'Temple Gates'."
