A hate crime turns out to be a young man's cry for help. Crews and Reese investigate a case where two Persian-Americans are killed and a third is kidnapped. They believe they are dealing with a hate crime so they race to meet the kidnappers demands before it's too late. Meanwhile, Crews dreams about solar panels and decides to buy a solar farm. Ted starts to question Crews impulsive nature.

Crews and Reese investigate a gas explosion in which an IRS agent leading a double life is the victim. What makes the case more difficult is the victim has two wives and acted as if he were a top secret spy for the US government. Crews and Reese try to determine the motive behind the killing and find who rigged the stove to explode. Crews is once again a suspect in a murder investigation when the lead detective who handled his case is found murdered.

Trama:

Charlei Crews dopo 7 anni passati in carcere per un delitto che non ha commesso viene scagionato da un abile avvocato. Visto l'errore giudiziaro e la pena ingiusta da lui subita viene ricompensato dallo stato con un notevole conguaglio economico e, secondo sua esplicita richiesta, con la restituzione del suo vecchio posto di lavoro, con tanto di promozione: il poliziotto.

Promosso quindi a Detective si aggira per Los Angeles un po' spaesato, un po' stralunato e un po' zen, condizione accettata più o meno di buon grado dalle persone che lo circondano vista l'esperienza traumatica da lui ingiustammente vissuta. Oltre a risolvere i normali casi parallelamente indaga sulla vicenda che l'ha visto protagonista, suo malgrado, cercando ufficiosamente vittime e carnefici.

Ad accompagnarlo c'è la sua collega, Dani Reese, bellissima donna dal carattere scontroso con alle spalle problemi disciplinari: Ted Earley, amico conosciuto in galera (recluso per frode) che è il suo migliore amico, nonché coinquilino, nonché gestore del suo (immenso?) patrimonio e Constance Griffiths, l'intraprendente avvocatessa che ha seguito il suo caso, che lo ha riscattato e che gli ha reso una nuova vita, life appunto.
