John From Cincinnati

Season 1 - Episode 1

Language: ENG
Subs: ITA (in another file)

Directed by: Mark Tinker
Written by: David Milch & Kem Nunn

At daybreak on the Tijuana Sloughs, Linc steps from a black SUV to watch the faded legend Mitch Yost surf alone. As he looks on, Linc notices a young man, John, standing over his shoulder. "The end is near," John says. "Mitch Yost needs to get back in the game." Linc, taking John for another sponsor competing for Mitch's grandson Shaun, warns him off: "Whoever's paying you better have you on a good health plan."

Out of the water, Mitch's message to Linc is simple: "Go f**k yourself." Linc tries to explain that, despite the drug-addled mess Mitch's son Butchie became under his sponsorship, he thinks Shaun is "the real deal" and can't wait to watch him compete at Huntington Beach this afternoon. The contest comes as a surprise to Mitch, whose righteous posture sags a few inches when Linc reveals that Shaun himself sent the agent a "sponsor me" video. After Linc and John leave, Mitch rinses the salt water from his hair and, looking down, sees his feet hovering several inches off the ground.

The Snug Harbor Motel - a chipped remnant of Imperial Beach's '50s charm - falls under new ownership today, and its current stewards, Ramon and Dickstein, scramble to hide months of Butchie's squatting. As Dickstein cooks up a plan to square Butchie with the landlord, the washed-up surfer arrives, pushing a stalled VW bus into the lot. Batting their questions away, Butchie hustles to his room to dig into the ounce of heroin his $2300 accident settlement just bought him. Tying off, he discovers the stash is bunk - nothing but quinine - just as Shaun knocks on his door. Trying to encourage his son while simultaneously bashing the sport of surfing, Butchie only manages to lose his temper and drive Shaun away.

After hearing about the competition, Mitch stomps into the family surf shop to forbid his wife, Cissy, from letting Shaun go to Huntington. For added effect, he drops the bomb that he has a brain tumor. After Mitch leaves, Cissy joins Shaun and Kai, the shop's shaper, in the back, handing Shaun a signed waiver and telling him to bum a ride to the contest from Bill, a family friend and retired cop.

Shaun visits Bill's house, which brims with birds of all sizes and colors, but the pair finds one of Bill's pets, Zippy, expired in his cage. Trying to protect the boy from the realities of death, Bill sweeps the lifeless bird into his hands - and it starts flapping wildly. Shaun doesn't buy Bill's assurance that they made a mistake: "He was dead, Bill. I saw him."

Livid over getting taken in the drug deal, Butchie leaves a voicemail with his dealer, threatening him with a "law enforcement tsunami." No sooner does Butchie hang up the phone than a transient ex-grunt, Vietnam Joe, drops John off at his doorstep. Eventually adopting John - and his platinum credit card - as a pilgrim to the surf school of Butchie "The Beast" Yost, the junkie takes him under his wing.

Cissy climbs into Mitch's backyard clubhouse to gather details on this brain tumor the "Big Kahuna" mentioned. Mitch tells her about the levitation, assuming he must be hallucinating but refusing to see a doctor. Cissy suggests the healing powers of sex. Afterward, Mitch's idea of pillow talk involves asking Cissy to get a camera to determine whether or not he's actually levitating.

Butchie takes John to the surf shop to pick out some boards, and Kai's suspicion of Butchie's motives leads to an argument about Shaun's future, which leads to an argument about Butchie in general. Storming out, he tells John, "I signed over custody so I wouldn't louse that kid up ... Plus I had to, to get probation." Still angry and looking to extend the dispute about Shaun, Butchie dials a phone John produces to call Mitch and bully him into meeting at the Snug harbor for a fight. "Don't forget to shoot up some courage," Mitch screams at him.

At the hotel, Dickstein and Ramon meet the new owner, a lottery winner named Barry who packs a holstered 9mm "in accordance with the State Lottery Commission's pamphlet." While Barry takes no issue with the dump's various squatters, he plans to level the place. At this moment, Butchie's van barrels into the lot, followed by Mitch's station wagon. Father and son square off outside Butchie's room, both incensed but neither wanting to throw the first punch.

Cissy, stopping by a super center to pick up Mitch's camera, manages to escalate some bickering with a stock boy into an all-out incident with police dispatched to cuff and stuff her. Bill, steeped in road rage as he drives Shaun to Huntington, feels a tire burst while passing the Snug Harbor and pulls over. At the same time, Shaun spots the cruiser with Cissy in back. "The pigs got Grandma," he tells Bill, who doesn't appreciate his choice of words.

As the situation with Butchie and Mitch spirals, Barry places the pair from a childhood memory: Butchie hit him with a broomstick while Mitch looked the other way. Barry starts rambling about his damaged psyche and turns his gun on himself, which Bills spots from afar - finally, a problem he can solve. The retired cop disarms Barry and admonishes Mitch and Butchie for acting up while Cissy waits in custody. Not that either of them had a clue. Through it all, John stands to the side, mumbling observations to himself and talking to Shaun.

When the misfit crew arrives at the police station, Bill tries to expedite Cissy's release (barely aware that his influence stems from the officers' desire to get rid of him) and makes no mention of Barry and his gun. In another room, Mitch and Butchie chalk up their behavior to brain tumors and dope sickness, respectively; this passes for an apology in the Yost family. Bill eavesdrops as Mitch explains his levitation to Butchie and gasps when Mitch rises abruptly from the ground. Bill sends Dickstein to look after Barry and tells John, who's now befriended Shaun, "I got my eye on you."

Finally, officers bring Cissy out, and Mitch tells her: "We ought to get wet." On the beach, Mitch tells Cissy that Bill "couldn't remember" if he was taking Shaun to Huntington. Cissy comes clean about her deception, telling him, "Maybe this is the time to admit we don't have a perfect marriage." Before paddling out, Butchie worries that John has overstated his skills on the water and advises him to fake a leg cramp if he wants to dodge the set. As it turns out, John catches a wave - and nails it. "Someone call an ambulance," Butchie howls. "John Monad put that wave in the ICU." On shore, Bill observes, muttering to himself, "I got my eye on you." John, hearing from an impossible distance, responds: "I got my eye on you, Bill."
