Estelle Getty Tribute : 25 July 1923 - 22 July 2008
Estelle Getty began her acting career in 1978 with Team-Mates (1978). She also had short roles in two critically acclaimed classics, Tootsie (1982) and Mask (1985). In 1985, Estelle began acting in "The Golden Girls" (1985), with Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, and Rue McClanahan. The successful show won two Emmys for outstanding television series, and Estelle herself won an Emmy in 1988. Among other things she's done in TV is playing Sophia Petrillo in shows several times, "The Golden Palace" (1992) and "Empty Nest" (1988) among them. Most recently, Estelle has been in the family film Stuart Little (1999) and playing "Hollywood Squares" (1998).
Getty played mother to Bea Arthur on "The Golden Girls" (1985), however, Bea is actually 15½ months older than Estelle. Estelle being born July 25, 1923 and Bea was born May 13, 1922.
Getty's career actually began when she was much younger on the 'borscht belt' circuit and Yiddish stage, but she gave it up to raise a family. She returned to acting much later and became a hit on Broadway as Harvey Fierstein's meddling mom in "Torch Song Trilogy". It was the L.A. tour of this show that led to her being cast in "The Golden Girls" (1985) and at age 62 she became an "overnight" TV star.
Retired in 2000 after revealing she had health issues. In the mid 1990s, she was misdiagnosed with Parkinson's disease. By the end of the 1990s, she was misdiagnosed again, this time with Alzheimer's disease. Later, she was correctly diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, which has similar symptoms to both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.
Played the same character, Sophia Spirelli Petrillo-Weinstock, on five different TV series: "The Golden Palace" (1992), "The Golden Girls" (1985), "Nurses" (1991), "Empty Nest" (1988), and "Blossom" (1991).
Was a strong supporter of gay rights.
During a brief reunion in November 2004 with "The Golden Girls" (1985)'s Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Beatrice Arthur, it was reported on TV by the ladies that Estelle was suffering from severe dementia.
She had two children with her late husband Arthur Gettleman: sons Carl Gettleman and Barry Gettleman.
To Carl and Barry Gettleman, Estelle's friends and family, I wish to express my sympathies an condolences.
The Golden Girls 1x01 The Engagement (1985)
Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche are three women who share a house in Miami, Florida. Dorothy's elderly mother, Sophia, unexpectedly moves in after her retirement home burns down, and Blanche accepts a proposal of marriage.
Beatrice Arthur ... Dorothy Petrillo Zbornak / ... (176 episodes, 1985-1992)
Rue McClanahan ... Blanche Devereaux (176 episodes, 1985-1992)
Betty White ... Rose Nylund (173 episodes, 1985-1992)
Estelle Getty ... Sophia Petrillo (173 episodes, 1985-1992)
In this classic pilot episode we discover that man-hungry Blanche (McClanahan) plans to marry Harry (Aletter) at the house after a whirlwind romance. Blanche's roommates Dorothy (Arthur) and Rose (White) react with surprise, shock and suspicion. Dorothy thinks it's too soon for Blanche to get married: "You've only known him a week!"; Rose worries that when Blanche gets married she will be turfed out: "Dorothy, we'll become bag ladies!" To complicate things even more, Dorothy's mother Sophia (Getty) turns up unannounced, claiming that the retirement home has just burned down. She now needs a place to stay. On the day of the wedding, Rose, acting on a hunch, intends to tell Blanche that Harry is not the man for her. She claims that her hunches have never been wrong. Dorothy doubts Rose - she even throws her in a closet to keep her quiet! Dorothy wants Blanche to be happy; she believes marriage will be good for her. That, however, never comes to pass. After waiting for hours for Harry, a cop arrives to say that Harry has been arrested for bigamy. Blanche is crushed, but soon recovers when she realises she has a new family: Dorothy, Rose....and Sophia.
# Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the pilot Blanche tells her date Harry that Sophia's home just burned down. Blanche was not in the room when Sophia shared this piece of information, and thus would have no way of knowing it.
# Continuity: Blanche's hair length changes repeatedly throughout the evening.
Sophia: [Dorothy opens the door, Sophia's first lines] Hi there.
Sophia: Everyone is fine no one died, the home burnt down.
Dorothy: My god - are you all right? How did you get here?
Sophia: I hitched!
Sophia: A cab - I took a cab.
Dorothy: Well you should have called.
Sophia: I'm perfectly capable of managing by myself, I don't need help - I'm a very indapendent person!
Dorothy: I know! I know!
Sophia: I need $67.00 for the cab.
Dorothy: $67.00? Ma, ma - this is crazy the home is 15 minutes from here.
Sophia: My cab driver is cute but he says there's an additional tax fee for a bilingual driver.
