JOHNNY CASH - AMERICAN V: A HUNDRED HIGHWAYS, album released July 3rd 2006.
Encoded 192Kbps [Lame] mp3. Covers included.
There is always something unbearably sad about hearing the voice of a dead singer, but when the CD carries a sticker saying 'the last recordings' the effect is doubled. And so, when the distinctive and gravelly voice fills the speakers, it is not difficult to stop and take it in.
This is very much Cash's My Way moment: a melancholy trawl through a series of songs, some classics themselves, on which he mulls over his life, the world and his faith as if he realises it will be his last contribution.
Even to a non-devotee it's almost heartbreaking: Cash's voice often thins to a virtual croak while in others he puts in what sounds like his all just to raise the tempo. Produced by Rick Rubin, this is a fitting finale, if unnerving at times.
