Since 1972, Townsville resident Louis Beers has assumed the identity of 'Aboriginal elder' King Billy Cokebottle, appearing on stage with black make-up and a thick accent. His comedy routine includes telling "Aboriginal jokes", many of which involve members of the 'Cokebottle family' including his cousin Morton.
Over a dozen albums of recorded live performances have been released, as well as compilations and video/DVD releases. Despite having a strong following with sections of the community (reportedly including large sections of the Queensland and Western Australian police forces), Beers' character has been met with objections from other groups who accuse him of being racist.King Billy Coke bottle, This was his 1st live recording.
