the DG recording is even more sumptuous than in its LP format—satisfyingly rich and complex in the big climaxes, wonderfully delicate and clean in the frequent passages of chamber-musical filigree, and how Maazel and his Berlin players enjoy Zemlinsky's Mahlerian riches! The baritone songs really do need an artist of fischer-Dieskau's sheer size in the dramatic first movement and the ardent fifth, and his intimacy and sense of line in the exquisite last song are deeply affecting. Varady, too, in her cooler way, is excellent: she brings a rapt purity to the fourth song and immaculate poise to the perilously unsupported, almost atonal vocal line of the sixth. This is, in short, a very fine performance and recording indeed of a work that is looking more and more like a crucial document of what one might term 'pre-modernism'.
