This is one of most famous and controversial productions of 'Tristan und Isolde' at the Bayreuth Festival in 1983.
Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's celebrated Bayreuth production filmed on the Festspielhaus stages with six cameras and in digital sound to recreate the unique intensity of a live performance in studio quality. "on the small screen the almost impressionistic play of colour is heightened to become an overhelming experience ... With Johanna Meier's unusually powerfull Isolde and René Kollo's resplendent, expressive Tristan, a better cast is hardly imaginable today" (Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung).
