JOHN DOWLAND: The John Dowland Collection - Barbara Bonney, Anne Sofie von Otter, Emma Kirkby, Anthony Rooley, Goran Sollscher, Nigel Rogers - Deutsche Grammphon

This is probably one of the most soothing collections you will own, not including those musical themepark compendiums some labels have been churning out. Dowland may be a contemporary of Shakespeare, but there is little of the Bard’s eruptive passion in his vocal and instrumental works. (For that you must listen to Verdi’s Shakespearean operas.) Most of the instrumentals on this 2-CD set are easy listening lute compositions, consuming about a quarter of the playing time. They are nice diversions and give color to this 2-CD set, turning it into a Dowlandiad.

Yet by no means are these compositions devoid of passion or drama. True, many sad songs ensue, like the justly famous I Saw My Lady Weep, sung by the masterfully rueful Nigel Rogers. But some vocal pieces are quite lively, like Can She Excuse My Wrongs, which Anne Sofie von Otter sings with an urgent passion found only in Andrew Marvell’s poem To His Coy Mistress. Come Away, Come Sweet Love is a delightful ensemble vocal piece with five singers showcasing their riveting counterpoint, lacing it with stunning poetry. Wisely, the producers have included singers with similar tessituras but different characteristics, like sopranos Emma Kirkby and Barbara Bonney, and mezzos Andrea von Ramm and von Otter. Kirkby’s voice is thinner, more delicate than Bonney’s; von Ramm’s tones are muscular and orotund, while von Otter’s are highly variegated and versatile. All are welcome additions to this collection. Then there is the dark side, firmly claimed by von Otter and von Ramm. Von Otter’s In Darkness Let Me Dwell starts softly in a melancholy minor key, swells dramatically as the singer voices the final words (“o let me living die, till death do come”) until the forlorn end, where she repeats “in darkness let me dwell.” Its drop in tempo and dynamics is so chilling it may jar you out of your relaxing lie-down at day’s end.
