This disc brings together Delius' most mature concertos, the Violin Concerto and the Piano Concerto.
The Delius Violin Concerto was Ralph Holmes last recording. It was his farewell. And what better way to say goodbye than with Delius? Every bar is heartfelt, Holmes plays so beautiful and eloquent that it almost hurts. What a great artist! His friend Handley and the Royal Philharmonic rise to the occasion. Holmes plays a gorgeous instrument, a Stradivari from 1736 on loan from the Royal Academy of Music. Without sentimentality one can conclude that this is with some distance the finest version of Delius' Violin Concerto before the public.
