Note: this is a revised version of the previous upload. The Bach-Busoni LP has been completely redone using a different pickup cartridge. This is intended, in part, to remedy the over-emphasized bass of the earlier version. The Brahms transfers have also been revised for the same reason - in addition to slight changes made in the 78rpm restorations.

Egon Petri (1881-1962) was born in Hanover to very musical Dutch parents. Petri's father was a violinist, employed in Hanover at the time, while his mother was a singer. In fact, one might easily consider the greater part of the family itself "musical" since Petri's grandfather had been an oboist and his great-grandfather an organist. Further, Petri's parents counted among their personal friends such musical notables as Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Brahms, Joachim, Clara Schumann, Mahler, Nikisch, Anton Rubinstein - and, of course, Ferrucio Busoni, Petri's later teacher and mentor (Petri's first piano teacher was none other than the famed Teresa Carreno). The original idea for making piano arrangements of Bach's organ works was first suggested to Busoni by Petri's mother in 1888 following an organ recital they had just attended in Leipzig. In short, all of this amounted to not a wholly bad set of preconditions and influences for a youth destined to become one of the major pianists and music pedagogues of the last century.

All of these recordings are fine examples of Petri's art. The 1937 four-disc set of Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto - with the London Philharmonic directed by Walter Goehr - is the first recording Petri made with an orchestra. It might also be considered a "model performance" of this work from the pianistic standpoint: well-proportioned, lyrical, intelligent - and without the slightest trace of sentimentality. Together with Petri's 1941 virtuoso performance of the Busoni arrangement of Liszt's Spanish Rhapsody, one also has a virtuosic showing from the Minneapolis Symphony and it's conductor during this time, Dimitri Mitropoulos. Both recordings possess excellent sound for their periods.

The wonderful 1950s Bach-Busoni and Brahms recordings ask for repeated listening - not the least due to the fact that they reverberate with a highly singular approach to music-making which has - unfortunately - long ago left us.
