Good as the Maazel/DG version of the Symphonic Dances is, with brilliant playing lightly and transparently recorded, the Ashkenazy on CD certainly brings
important advantages. In sound as in interpretation it is bigger, bolder and warmer than its rival. It is amazing how well the Decca engineers in a relatively
short time have learnt to cope with the acoustic problems of the darkly reverberant Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, so as now to produce some of their most
spectacular recordings there—which this certainly is. As on LP, the Ashkenazy — which for some is controversial for its bittingly fast speed for the first
dance — brings a substantial advantage in its generous fill-up, a searingly powerful reading of The isle of the dead, which I count the finest performance
of all in Ashkenazy's Rachmaninov series. Understandably it is placed first on the CD.'
