"An all Russian affair ? Of course not. I can be a little provocative at times (maybe fishing for some comments!?) but there's no denying in the quality of those big names mentioned there (Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Prokofiev). If we think of composers of the 20th C. with major contributions in all genres: opera/ballet, chamber, instrumental, concertos, symphonies, orchestral - then we are left with contenders like those above - and even more so if we talk about modern contemporary classical after the big bang in Paris started by Igor with "Le Sacre du Printemps" -"The Rite of Spring". But as a whole, of course there are fantastic composers. Only from my FIN we have Sibelius, Rautavaara, Klami, Englund, Sallinen, Aho etc. Rest of the world: Bartok, R.Strauss, Arnold, Janacek, Copland, Glass, Berg, Kodaly... just to name a few. All in all - the 20th C was a very exiting century, with astonishing works being recorded now all of the time by recording labels. Just dig in and search and enjoy the whole repertoire and many composers, just as i do.
PS. I didn't even like Prokofiev at first, but when listening more and more, i suddenly started to "understand" and love it. He is not easy listening like Master Chopin but here on this disc we have "10 pieces from Romeo & Juliet" a good and easy start for someone new to Sergei.
My advice then, give it a try, you just might start loving this..."
