Recorded in the Muenster of Freiburg, which boast a unique setup of four antiphonal organs that can be played all at the same time from a central console, Power Biggs\' playing not only gives new insights into Bach\'s works but can move you to tears, it\'s that beautiful.

In this stereo version, the four organs have been arranged so that they spread the available 2-D soundstage. For the full quadrophonic sound, you\'ll have to buy the SACD, which, I might add, is worth the price because it is even more spectacular.

Music and Space
In his four \"Great\" Toccatas and Fugues -- the most dramatic and vivid of his organ works -- Johann Sebastian Bach made much play with effects of space, sonority, tone placement, antiphony and echo. Only in the Toccatas, and hardly at all in his many Preludes and Fugues, does Bach compose in this way. Space enhaces music, which Bach knew well, as in the familiar D-Minor Toccata, where the rests between phrases enable the reverberation of a great building to play its part, literally suspending the music in air, then permitting it to fall in fine descent.

(The length of the church is 100 meters -- 300 feet -- and reverberation time is six seconds.)
