The Avant Garde Project is a series of 20th-century classical-experimental-electroacoustic torrents digitized from LPs whose music has in most cases never been released on CD, and so is effectively inaccessible to the vast majority of music listeners today. This is wild stuff, so check it out if you've never heard this sort of music before. The analog rig used to extract the sound from the grooves is near state-of-the-art, producing almost none of the tracking distortion or surface noise normally associated with LPs.
AGP1-108 are now available for direct download in the archive at www.avantgardeproject.org
AGP109-112 and other recent AGP installments are also available at http://thepiratebay.org/user/loudav
NOTE: The AGP will be off for three weeks, returning to action on August 22.
AGP113 continues our tribute to Othmar Schoeck with recordings of his two string quartets, performed by the Neues Zürcher Quartett and transcribed from a PAN LP (130048). Another recording of these works is available on CD, but this one appears never to have been re-released. It's a clear, warm recording from 1981. The LP packs almost half an hour of music per side, so there's mild tracking distortion in the last couple of minutes of each side, but it's not too bad. And otherwise the LP is in great shape. Schoeck's string quartets are both mature works (from 1913 and 1923), and to varying degrees bring to mind the quartets of Debussy, Zemlinsky, Janacek, and Martinu.
The torrent includes a PDF file with scans of the liner notes from the LPs included in this and the other two Schoeck installments. If you like what you hear in these installments, check out commercially available recordings of Elegie (a lieder collection) and Penthesilea (his most celebrated opera).
Equipment used for A/D conversion: Lyra Helikon phono cartridge, Linn LP12/Lingo turntable, Linn Ittok tonearm, Audioquest LeoPard tonearm cable, PS Audio PS2 preamplifier, Kimber PBJ interconnect, M-Audio Audiophile USB A/D converter.
NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, this recording is currently out of print. If you know otherwise, please let me know ASAP, as I do not wish any artists to be deprived of the royalties that they so richly deserve.
