Reporter Oliver Steeds enters the darkly dangerous worlds of the desperate souls who flee North Korea and its ruthless, repressive political regime. Invariably they end up in China, forced to live in miserable conditions and vulnerable to being denounced to the Chinese authorities (North Korea offers a 20-pounds bounty for every reported escapee), before being returned home for punishment in hard labour camps.

For some, the prospect of being sent back to their hellish former lives is too much; tragically, they would rather commit suicide. Escaped women are easy targets for sex traffickers and some are even sold into marriage to Chinese husbands.........

Many escapees try to reach South Korea, where they can claim housing benefit and some financial support ¿ but it¿s a 3,000 mile trip and only five per cent ever make it to the South. The team meets a broker who helps people along this journey. He explains that many carry a knife, not for protection, but to kill themselves if they are arrested. .........(major edits)
