On January 29, 2009, President Obama signed his first bill into law: the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. By making it easier to hold companies accountable for pay discrimination, it brought us all one step closer to equal pay for equal work. Calling equal pay “not just a women's issue, but a family issue," Obama said the bill he signed was for women across the country who are still earning just 78 cents for every dollar men earn.
Finally, we got to see what change looks like - but we still have a long way to go. The U.S. ranks well below most industrialized nations in its support of working mothers and families. In this Link TV special, we air The Motherhood Manifesto - a fascinating, informative, and ultimately infuriating film about motherhood in America. ;; You’ll hear funny, inspiring and heartbreaking stories told by mothers from all parts of this country, as they call for substantive policy change to protect real people and ordinary families. Fast-paced and engaging, yet carefully balanced and researched for journalistic credibility, The Motherhood Manifesto turns the camera on America’s hidden crisis of caring.
In addition to the film, we present a studio discussion with Amy Boyd, Campaign Director for Momsrising.org. Amy and host Wendy Hanamura will talk about how far we’ve come in promoting women's rights, and what more we can do to really support "family values" in the United States.
