Anatomist Dr Alice Roberts follows in the chilly footsteps of our ancestors who left Africa 70,000 years ago for Siberia, one of the coldest places on Earth. Not that they knew that's where they were going at the time.
And judging by the harsh lifestyle of the contemporary Siberian nomads she visits, they'd have turned back if they knew what lay in store. But what puzzles Roberts most is why - if we really did all descend from just one small band of homo sapiens - do the world's populations all look so different from one another?
The Chinese have a controversial theory that they don't share our ancestry but, although she listens politely, she's not convinced. But then neither is the team of Chinese geneticists she subsequently meets.
