Here's a self-recommending issue. With respect to Das Klagende Lied, Philips captured this lovely pendant to Haitink's complete Mahler symphony cycle with the Royal Concertgebouw in 1973, just in time to avoid the interpretive torpor that seems to have enveloped the conductor (with rare exceptions) ever since. It's a gorgeous performance of the revised, two-part version, and for sheer beauty of sound and excellence of orchestral playing it has the competition beat at every turn. The soloists are also super: Norma Proctor's dusky initial entrance after the evocative prelude is particularly unforgettable. In lieu of the cantata's original Part One, which Haitink never recorded and which Mahler dropped on revision, we get an equally well-played Adagio from the unfinished Tenth Symphony--a little light on metaphysical angst, perhaps, but a joy to hear. This disc really does present these forces at their best, and it's very well recorded too.
