Leonin, Ensemble Organum 24-bit.txt
This is a 24-bit/44.1 kHz transcription using high-end analog equipment of a recording of organa by the great 12th century composer Leonin, performed by Ensemble Organum and directed by Marcel Pérès. The recording was made in July 1984, engineered by Jean-Francois, and released originally on LP in 1985 by Harmonia Mundi (HMC 1148). It has not to my knowledge ever been released on CD, which is puzzling as its a remarkable recording.
Ensemble Organum presents Leonin's organum works in the context of a nearly complete Christmas mass, the other movements ranging from straight chant to ornamental polyphonie. Set in this context, Leonin's florid organa sound especially stunning. The performance is excellent all around, and the rhythms of the chant movement sound just right to my untutored ear. Listening to this is the closest I've come in imagination to attended a Medieval mass.
The LP transcribed for this torrent is in excellent condition, with only a bit of tracking distortion in the last minute of the last track on side B (why do dramatic conclusions always have to be at the end of LP sides, when tracking distortion is most likely?!?). The torrent includes a PDF file with scans of the track listing and booklet notes.
I have recently uploaded several other 24-bit LP transcriptions of comparable quality, and will be doing more in the near future. You can find them by clicking on my user id.
