Introduction (by P. Hubert Dopf, SJ): In the programme recorde dhere we do not wish to present a concert, not even a church conc ert of sacred music. What we want is to allow the listener toim merse himself in the spirit of the oldest liturgical music ofthe Latin church, music which, although bound up with the formsof t he first centuries of western culture, is much more than a highly cultivated art. Gregorian chant is the expression of a profoun d inwardness; it is prayer. Therefore any striving towards supe rficial effect is completely foreign to it. Gregorian melody is born of the fear of the Lord, even in those songs filledout wit h a jubilus (melisma), which tends to fragment the word with its long sequences of notes. There remains always a trace of a cert ain shy reserve. The believing Christian knows that anyattempt to voice the divine must come to naught. A large number of the chants we perform is associated with the subject of the"Holy Spi rit," that spirit which is in itself the personification of the love and joy of God. Our singing may be understood thus: that all of us - you as the sympathetic listener and we as singers - allow ourselves to be transported by these ancient chants, which sing of the goodness and beauty of God and of the goodfortune of Man, whom God has favoured. The Choralschola of the Vienna Hofburgkapelle: Since 1952 the Schola has enriched Sunday wor ship at the Vienna Hofburgkapelle with Gregorian settingsof the Proper of the Mass. In doing so they furnish an essential part o f the traditional liturgy of the High Mass, supplementary to th e Ordinary provided by the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle. Madeup exc lusively of former members of the Vienna Boys' Choir, it has bec ome over the years an internationally recognised specialist ens emble, receiving many pres- tigious invitations. At retreats in various monasteries the Schola also tries to maintain thesacre d background for a veracious interpretation of the liturgical ch ants. Succeeding Monsignor Kosch and Professor Schabasser,P. Hubert Dopf SJ has been responsible for the Schola since 1973. As Professor of Gregorian Studies at the Vienna Musikhochschule he ensures the consider- ation of current musicological finding s in questions of interpretation, such as rhythm in the neumes of the Codices of St. Gallen. The recordings produced under hi s direction for Philips Classics were highly praised by interna tionally recognised specialists and are today regarded as valuab le models for choral performance practice.
