Torrent description

This is a 24-bit/44.1 kHz transcription using high-end analog equipment of a performance by Christopher Hogwood of sonatas and sonatinas by C.P.E. Bach, on a clavichord from his own collection made by Johann Adolf Hass in 1761. It was recorded by Peter Wadland and Simon Eadon and released on LP by L'Oiseau Lyre (DSLO 589) in 1981. It has not to my knowledge ever been released on CD.

This is my personal favorite clavichord recording. The instrument has a pleasantly complex sound, the recording is detailed and nicely balanced in an appropriately resonant space, and Hogwood gives a fine performance on an instrument that he is presumably familiar with. The sonatas and sonatinas accompanied the composer's "Essay on the true art of playing keyboard instruments", published in 1753, though the sonatinas were included only in the 1787 third edition.

The LP transcribed for this torrent is in excellent condition. Like all clavichord recordings, it was mastered at a higher volume level to make full use of the dynamic range of recording technology, and should be listened to at about 8-10 dB below the level you normally use. The torrent includes a PDF file with scans of the notes from the LP cover and booklet, including photographs of the Hass clavichord.

I have recently uploaded several other 24-bit LP transcriptions of comparable quality, and will be doing more in the near future. You can find them by clicking on my user id.

Equipment used for A/D conversion: Lyra Helikon phono cartridge, Linn LP12/Lingo turntable, Linn Ittok tonearm, Audioquest LeoPard tonearm cable, PS Audio PS2 preamplifier, Kimber PBJ interconnect, M-Audio Audiophile USB A/D converter.
