Antal Dorati's Concertgebouw recordings aren't that numerous, but they are all very good. Given his well-deserved reputation as an orchestral trainer, it wasn't often that Dorati had the chance to work in the studio with the very greatest ensembles, and when you take his affinity for Bartók into further consideration, the results here easily stand as one of the finest available versions of the Concerto for Orchestra. The first-movement introduction, swifter than usual but with no lack of mystery, sets the tone for a performance in which urgency and atmosphere exist in a state of perfect balance. The orchestra's magnificent first-desk winds and brass shine in the second movement, while the haunting central elegy's passionate eruptions have tremendous, despairing intensity. Dorati times the fourth movement's burlesque "interruptions" perfectly, and his finale combines real excitement with fine precision and detail.
Excellent sonics complete a very attractive picture indeed, notwithstanding the availability of recordings of the work by this same conductor on Mercury Living Presence and Hungaroton. Along with Bernstein, Kubelik, and Ancerl, this is a performance that everyone should hear. "..."
