Torrent description

This is a 24-bit/44.1 kHz transcription using high-end analog equipment of a performance by Denis Vaughan on a clavichord made by Thomas Goff. It was recorded in the dead of night one summer in a tiled bathroom in a villa in the village of Scandriglia, Italy, using Neumann U87 microphones positioned about the level of the player's head. The recording was engineered by Gaetano Vituzzi and Maurizio Montanesi, and released on Arabesque Recordings (8044) in 1980. It is provided by request.

Note: The clavichord is a very quiet instrument, and so is commonly recorded at an artificially high level to make the best use of a reproduction medium's dynamic range. This recording should be listened to at about 10-12 dB below the level of most recordings. The liner notes recommend that the volume be set so low that you cannot hear the clavichord when speaking in a medium soft voice, but that strikes me as utterly nonsensical, since speaking does not interfere much with my ability to hear so much as my ability to appreciate what I am hearing. I have found that the recording sounds about right when the sounds of keys being depressed and released are quiet enough to be almost subliminal--if you hear loud clunking you should decrease the volume.

I have recently uploaded seven other 24-bit LP transcriptions of comparable quality, and will be doing more in the near future. You can find them by clicking on my user id. I have a number of other excellent recordings of clavichord, and expect to upload one or more in the near future.

Equipment used for A/D conversion: Lyra Helikon phono cartridge, Linn LP12/Lingo turntable, Linn Ittok tonearm, Audioquest LeoPard tonearm cable, PS Audio PS2 preamplifier, Kimber PBJ interconnect, M-Audio Audiophile USB A/D converter.

The works in tracks A1 and A2 are from Anna Magdalena Bach's Notebook. The works in track A3 are by C.P.E. Bach. The works in tracks B1-B3 are preludes from The Well-Tempered Clavier. I don't know what Mr. Vaughan had against fugues.

A1 [11:21] - Musette D, Menuet a, Aria d, Menuet G, Menuet c, Marcia D
A2 [9:13] - Choral a, Menuet G/g
A3 [8:29] - Andante e (Sonata no. 1), Cantabile b (Sonata No. 3)
B1 [9:42] - C (Bk I, BWV 846), f (Bk II, BWV 881), A-flat (Bk I, BWV 862)
B2 [7:57] - E (Bk I, BWV 854), b-flat (Bk I, BWV 867), F (Bk I, BWV 856)
B3 [12:28] - F-sharp (Bk I, BWV 858), a (Bk II, BWV 889), e-flat (Bk I, BWV 853)

NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, this recording is not currently available commercially. If you know otherwise, please let me know ASAP, as I do not wish any artists to be deprived of the royalties that they so richly deserve.
