RIGHT BY ME: Nice Movie!! GAY interest!! Year: 2005
A Wonderful Love Story From An Ancient Land This sweet, sexy and alluring movie follows the lives and loves of three college friends all in different stages of coming out to themselves and others.

Handsome and bookish Tat attends coming out support meetings with his out and proud friend Nat. The two boys are surprised when Tat\'s crush, the hunky athlete Ek, shows up to a meeting. Questioning his sexuality Ek turns to Tat for advice and a sweet romance gradually develops, creating an awkward situation between Tat and Nat. To survive and prosper, all three must surmount the homophobia of Thai society, neglectful and abusive home lives, gay bashings, school work and their own love triangle.
Right by Me toys with sophisticated explorations of young gay life in Thailand, but the story ultimately boils down to landing the cute boy. Is there more to life?
Thanyatorn Siwanukrow\'s college gay romance, Right By Me, following the Outfest consensus, is \"cute.\" When the programmer introduced the film, she described it as a \"cute\" film. When she recounted her and fellow programmers\' initial reactions to the film, they all thought it was \"cute.\" Later she continued and re-emphasized how really \"cute\" the film is, and hopefully the audience will think it\'s \"cute.\" After such a tirade, these comments would\'ve normally already driven me outside the theatre and found me heading back into the parking lot. Being promised, or threatened, with cute isn\'t always a good thing. But I stuck to it.
Admittedly, the three male characters of this film are tolerably cute: Nat, the flamboyant and comfortably gay man even as he\'s constantly beaten up for his homosexuality; Tat, his best friend who\'s yet to tell his parents that he\'s gay; and finally, Ek, the basketball player who\'s struggling with coming to terms with his attraction to men. The geometrical shape of this narrative is, of course, that of a love triangle: Nat\'s in love with Tat and has no problems expressing it; Tat\'s in love with Ek and struggles with it; and Ek is supposedly in love with his girlfriend, Da, but finds himself drawn more and more to Tat, especially when they really get to know each other as Tat tutors Ek (the proverbial jock who\'s bad with numbers) in statistics. Further complicating these up-and-down relationships is each character\'s family situation about his homosexuality, which, however close it gets to feelings of hurt, rejection or even hatred involved in coming out, generally sticks to a utopian, alternative universe (basically, all the mothers end up supporting their gay sons and all the fathers, if one had one to begin with, eventually drop off the narrative earth).
Taken in isolation, each character is drawn out well enough, probably because the film and screenplay are based on Mexican American Alex Sanchez\' books Rainbow Boys, which targets the gay teen market. But as interesting as they are and as sympathetic the audience becomes to each of the characters\' distinct problems with being a young gay man in Thailand, there\'s a palpable absence of a strong emotional and critical core, especially in the family context, which would\'ve held the audience\'s interest more tightly.

Also, it\'s too exaggerated to say that it deals with being a young gay man in Thailand since there\'s not enough of a specific localisation or contextual grounding that translates as such. On this note, interesting comparisons of other Thai representations of alternative sexualities and notions of gender could be made with Beautiful Boxer (2003) and The Iron Ladies (2000), both of which are based on actual lives and events (the former about Parinya Charoenphol, a Muythai boxer who underwent a sex change operation, and the latter about a first ever Thai volleyball team composed of gays, transvestites and transsexuals that actually won the national amateur volleyball championship) and both of which perhaps go a bit further in discussing such issues. Though these two films aren\'t devoid of some gay stereotypes (especially The Iron Ladies), Right By Me, in comparison, is filled with excessive scenarios that fall into stereotyping, as what begins as a seemingly slice-of-Thai-gay-life and differing subjectivities of differing perspectives eventually narrows down to the notion of simply scoring the cute guy you want.
