A word to the wise: invest in some earplugs before you start watching The Family, because there's an awful lot of yelling - mainly mum Jane and dad Simon bawling at their 19-year-old daughter Emily. And Emily bawling right back. Channel 4 is obviously very proud of The Family, a 21st-century version of Paul Watson's ground-breaking series of the same name (though it's a different family and has absolutely no connection with the Wilkinses). Emily takes centre stage in the first instalment. She's at loggerheads with her parents, who resent her treating their home "like a hotel" . . . as do presumably the parents of millions of similarly sullen and ungrateful teens across the land.

The Family - Part 2

We are two weeks into the fly-on-the-wall series focused on the "ordinary" Hughes family, and the question must be answered: what does mum Jane actually do? So far, just about all we've seen of her is Jane sprawled on the sofa in her dressing gown watching the telly, Jane sulking and Jane lying in bed. And Jane shouting, because she shouts a lot. Dad Simon, meanwhile, is the family's Atlas - he appears to do all the cooking, he has a full-time job, he constantly appeases his wife and he's the healing balm applied to the Hugheses' frequent arguments. When 17-year-old daughter Charlotte tearfully announces that she wants to leave school, it's up to Simon to save the day.

The Family - Part 3

"Calm down," Jane Hughes tells husband Simon, who has raised his voice (yet again) in the hope of getting his kids to obey him. But who can blame him for continually shouting? Three weeks of this fly-on-the-wall series capturing every argumentative moment of this family's life has made me feel like screaming, too. First it was 19-year-old Emily, who loudly refused to listen when he told her not to go out clubbing at midnight. Now it's the turn of 14-year-old Tom, who won't go to bed at a reasonable time. And, like most of the teenagers in this family, he seems incapable of speaking more than a few mumbled words at a time. "Why do you fight with me over everything?" Simon asks him, before giving him a cuddle. So (yet again), it all ends well . . . although (yet again) Emily goes out.
