Just when a show comically dismantling Britain's destructive obsession with F-list celebrity was needed, along comes this weird celebration of the genre featuring Avid Merrion, a saddo of foreign extraction who lives alone but for the Big Brother contestant he keeps locked in a cupboard and his dead mother whom he keeps in another. Merrion - the alter ego of Leigh Francis - is the self-professed 'number one celebrity superfan in the world', and in a succession of mindbending sketches he dons grotesque latex masks to imitate celebrities, or goes out as himself to meet others, exercising a level of coarse, crude 'wit' that makes Carry On comedy look positively sophisticated. Nevertheless, the character and his show had a considerable cult following and the odd moment of inspired idiocy. Merrion made more and more guest appearances on other shows and later was able to attract celebrities to his (many to be interviewed by Merrion in the guise of a small bear). By the third series (Vol 3) Avid had become a celebrity himself and was given his own chat show - although the interviews (by both Avid and his naughty bear) were constantly interrupted by the usual foul-mouthed, quasi-slanderous, celebrity-bashing mask-enhanced sketches.

Notes. Merrion rose to fame as a Big Brother obsessive who filmed advertisements about it for C4's sister station E4. The show's title is from a song by Craig David (another Avid Merrion obsession), 'Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)'. After the first series the show's title usually dropped the apostrophe to be simply Bo Selecta!


On 15 December 2003 C4 screened Avid Merrion's Proper Crimbo - The Making Of, a look behind the scenes at the shooting of the Bo' Selecta! star's Christmas single plugged the previous month.
