This Danish/German/French/Irish/British co-production attempts to create the sort of CGI children's film that they've been perfecting in the US since Pixar first wowed audiences with 1995's Toy Story. Despite its virtues (impressive backgrounds, some novel design like the odd chicks and freaky fox) it does highlight how hard it is to pull off a gorgeous CGI animation with a funny, entertaining story, which has that broad family appeal.

The story is inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's classic fable 'The Ugly Duckling,' but the core creative team elaborate and modernise it, placing the action in a world not unlike that of Ratatouille or Flushed Away, where talking animals have complete miniature societies working alongside our own.

Ratso (Jones) is a city rat who fancies himself as something of an impresario. That he's talentless in the art of promoting performers doesn't cross his mind as he tries to pass off a stumpy worm trussed up in a straw as "the longest worm in the world". Just as he's getting booed off the stage, he's accosted by Phyllis (Olson), one tough rat who has a serious but unspoken grievance with him. Narrowly escaping her and her sibling henchmen Frank (also Jones) and Stan (Hetzler), Ratso and his worm colleague Wesley (Tylack) accidentally find themselves on a train and transported into unknown territory - the countryside.
