Stravinsky, best known for his neo-classical ballets such as The Rite of Spring, also produced a handful of enduring and brilliant neo-classical symphonies.His Symphony in Three movements – one of his few symphonies - was one of his major works and was composed in his later years as a United States citizen. Though characteristically neo-classical in basic composition, the work is not only highly rhythmic, but also violent in expression. Written during World War II, it is inspired by the senseless and extreme violence that caused him much duress as a Russian ex-patriot and as a new US citizen. The final movement dealing with the eventual victory of the allies breathes a sigh of redemption at its end. This is an enduring work by one of Russia's finest modern-period composers.
This recording is, as you may have noticed listed above, conducted by none other than Stravinsky himself, and is quite a treat.
